I recently purchased a second hand Mini Cooper. The keys are sealed units with soldered in rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately the previous owner had used just one of the keys so other ceased to function. BMW charge £465 to supply a new one.

I sent key to Remotefob Centre midday Monday. It was returned fully repaired midday Wednesday. Great service at about 1/7th cost of using BMW.
