"Leather swatch request"

I recently contacted the Chesterfield Company to order some leather swatches. The process was very easy and I received the swatches a few days later. Now I just have to decide which one to go with as they are all so nice. So far, my experience with the company has been very positive.

Yes samples great quality and exactly what we might want. Sadly access is tight and we don’t think we would get one of the chesterfields in. Only negative is that you use serpentine springs which in our experience don’t last well.

"Beware of leather colour fade!"

I purchased a Manchester Vintage Leather Armchair & Queen Anne footstool from The Chesterfield Company after being delighted with the Vintage Cognac colour sample. Initially I was impressed with the comfort and quality of the armchair & footstool but 3 years on I have a very different view. The colour now has completely drained from the leather in all areas, leaving a bland tan colour that is devoid of the cracked two tone finish the leather once had. After contacting The Chesterfield Company I was pretty much told that the colour fade was my doing:

“Leather can react to its environment such as sunlight fading, drying in heat but also other things can affect it such as we've seen room sprays that land on the leather and strip the natural waxes and affect it or even the natural body oils that are secreted from the skin (particularly if a person is on certain medications) can react with leather and cause colour loss.”

The armchair and footstool are not exposed to direct sunlight and I do not use room sprays in my home. I have recently paid several hundred pounds to have a furniture specialist restore the leather and it was commented on that the colour fade should not have happened so soon (3 years??) after manufacture. Poor colour retention is often caused by substandard leather preparation to promote colour absorption, or a lack of a hard wearing top coat lacquer, which explains why there has been such a drastic change in colour after such a reasonably short time (there is a reason why only a 12 month warranty is provided on the leather). The Chesterfield Company - do not trust them, do not use them!
