"This was a trip of a life time, seeing…"
This was a trip of a life time, seeing so much of Chile North to South. Our guide Rodrigo Reyes was wonderful and found us so many birds(253,with many being life birds)! Our accommodations were top notch and the food was so good. Travel in the country was easy and we were able to avoid any traffic problems due to Rodrigo's local knowledge. We not only added to our life list with many great birds but learned so much about the Chilean history and geology. We also had an impressive mammal list as well , finishing off with a Hairy Armadillo! I would recommend Birdwatching Chile to any birder looking to enjoy an amazing trip to Chile.

"Birdwatching Chile gets my vote."
Had a great time with Rodrigo Reyes and Carlos (made sure we arrived at our destinations) and Birdwatching Chile for two days in early March. I was in Santiago preparing for a trip to Patagonia with a group and wanted to see some of the bird life in the Santiago area. I booked both the Coastal Range and the Seashore/Costal Wetlands trips. So glad I had the extra time to do so.
Rodrigo met me at the airport and we went about an hour north of Santiago to a national park (La Campana) which is a UNESCO designated area. I fell in love with the palm trees, the Chilean Wine Palm, some can be 800 years old. If the wind is blowing, listen, and you will hear them singing. As all birders know, high noon can be the kiss of death for viewing active birds and we did run into this, but I did manage to see about 15 new species, including a Tufted Tit-Tyrant and an Austral Pygmy-Owl. My flight landed at 915 AM so this put us in the heat of the day for exploring. We missed some of the endemics that we had hoped to see but there is always next time.
The second day was a trip to the coast and north of Valparaiso and then on to a few wetland areas. AMAZING. Humbolt Penguins, 3 species of cormorants, the beautiful Inca Tern, coots in abundance, and the Many-Coloured Rush-Tyrant. Thanks to Birdwatching Chile I saw some amazing landscapes and picked up at least 50 new life birds.
Rodrigo is very down to earth and very knowledgable about the habitats that support the birds we love to see. There are many birding guides in Chile and I am sure they are all very good and professional but I had a great two days out in the field. The only thing I missed was a guided tour of Santiago (I needed an extra day) that my travelling companions were able to enjoy but you cannot always do it all. It would be fun to do birding and wine tasting. Rodrigo does offer this option too.
