"So pleased I chose this scooter"
Veleco Faster Mobility Scooter with Lithium-ion Battery.
First impressions: At first, I was impressed when the helpful chatline 'Agnes' answered all my questions to my satisfaction, but somewhat taken aback when she said delivery would likely take some weeks.
Following the trackline, which showed my location and most of western Europe.
Late in the day, after just four weeks the scooter arrived, with fully charged battery,
Two keys & remotes, charger, documents pack, including DVLA registration forms, and user manual,
all in easy-to-read English!.
The driver Wojciech - (I understand, had brought the scooter from Poland) was extremely thorough and helpful in showing me all the controls, road-tested it himself, and then ran alongside me whilst I did the same.
Sometimes, (with the accent) I may have missed the odd bit of info; other than that, the whole process was pretty self-explanatory.
Then trouble!
Once or twice the machine failed to switch on properly, giving a momentary display, then nothing. Wojciech was dismayed at this, and offered either to call in his colleague who could fix the problem, return the scooter to Poland and bring a replacement in about two weeks time, or refund my money.
As his colleague was nearby I opted for him to check it out.
Mike (also Polish) arrived the next day, took a look at the symptoms and immediately changed a couple of parts. (I won't say which parts, in case this was Mike's little secret)
Problem solved! Mike was unable to say why the original parts were the wrong specification.
My own unqualified theory is that these scooters have been mostly assembled on the assumption they will be powered by a lead-acid battery; (Lithium ones being a introduced more recently) and the control unit had been fooled into immobiliser mode by a change in drain.
Mike then remained with the scooter for an hour or two afterwards, checking that all was well.
Phoned me later to check again. Two more check calls the next day, and another call from Wojciech, all of them concerned that the scooter was still working okay.
Now to the scooter itself: What a beautiful machine!
I took it out for a short trip the next day, with the following observations:
Take particular care of uneven road surfaces which can impart a disconcerting wobble. It’s a hard ride otherwise. Take corners carefully (narrow wheelbase) and of course, with four wheels you can't lean into a bend like a motorbike would. Because the front wheels are not concentric with the steering column, steering can seem more responsive than expected, so take care not to oversteer.
Take care going down hills as you could easily find yourself going too fast. Gravity respects no speed limits, and the speedo will not show more than the mode you have set it at.
Copes very well up hills But! Presumably because of the 'soft start', you can easily lose confidence when starting up a hill from stationary.
The motor won’t work as long as you are touching either of the brakes, and the machine will immediately start to roll backwards. You need to quickly coordinate their release by smartly increasing the throttle.
Underseat storage is pretty non-existent, nearly all the space being taken up by the battery; although the box on the back makes up for that; and there is always the small open glove box for small articles, and cup-holder. I’m not sure how often I will need to use the USB to charge my phone with.
Also remember the indicators are not self-cancelling, and although there are symbols on the display they are easy to miss. I would have preferred a flashing light or beeper. But they also serve the function of hazard lights, meeting DVLA requirements for driving on dual-carriageways.
I was bemused by the remote controls when I couldn’t make sense of the symbols until Mike explained them to me. (I filled the symbols with paint, to see them more clearly)
If, like me, you have driven a two-wheeled vehicle, you tend to avoid potholes, just remember you have four wheels now, and you can be sure that one of your wheels will find it!
All in all, I would have to be a world-class curmudgeon to award this scooter any less than the five stars it deserves. Well done Veleco.
