"Have you got a problem with binge eating"

I have had a problem with binge eating since my son Joshua was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis. His disease causes tumours to grow in all his vital organs and alongside that he seizures about 4 times an hour. Food was always my place of comfort whatever the news. I have tried various diets all have resulted in weight loss, and weight gain. Recently Joshua's condition has worsened and are not likely to improve. Joshua, loves activities and we are seldom indoors, but as my weight increased, I have withdrawn from some of the things that give him joy. Some because physically, I can't do them like pushing his wheelchair on hikes in the parks and forest. The other in a sense of shame that I have let myself slip that far into obesity.

I made the decision that surgery could offer me some physical tools to manage what and how I ate, the ability to re-chip my brain around eating well alongside a more balanced regime. In large part, I wanted to make sure Joshua got to experience whatever he wanted too in whatever time he has left, and that shouldn't and wouldn't be a limiting factor in that. A colleague of mine recommended Professor Dr Haluk Ünalp and I did my own research. I am scientically minded so I read a lot if studies on the benefits of weightloss surgery, I even looked at all the mortality statistics and the error rates globally. I then looked at user experiences, and then made contact with Asya the professors wonderful daughter.

Asya from the start was warm and friendly, she arranged everything. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Asya explained day by day what was going to happen and what I should expect. She me arranged for a lovely driver to met me with a warm handshake and a bottle of water in a beautiful VW(picture below). Asya met me at the Hospital at 2100 and look me to my room. The room was lovely and spacious with its own bathroom and aircon. I was introduced to the nursing staff who were all very helpful and friendly, they took bloods and did my ECG that night. In the morning I was taken for my CT scan, height and weight measurements and then straight for colonoscopy. This was done under sedation and no pain or discomfort at all.

An hour later I had the pleasure of meeting Professor
ÜNALP. He is a lovely warm guy, I'm certain he knew how anxious I was patted me on the shoulder and reassured me everything was going to be fine. 30 mins later I was in theatre and sedated. I was woken by the staff about two hours later(OP is about 45)mins. Physiologically we are all different so I know pain thresholds are different, I wasn't in pain, I would describe it more as discomfort. This was quickly alleviated by pain relief and fluids. It's day 2 for me and I have mild discomfort and I am so thankful for having the procedure.

On reading reviews I found a lot of negativity around having procedures abroad. There is a lot of scaremongering in the press, there are no statistical analysis because the results wouldn't make bad news, and bad news sells papers. My experience of Professor Dr Haluk Ünalp and all the staff is so overwhelmingly positive. The facilities are very clean, and everything is just so efficient. If you are considering Bariatric surgery, please make contact with Asya and you will have made the right decision.

"Great experience overall with the team"

Great experience overall with the team. From initial contact to the surgery to after-care has been fab. I’ve always struggled to keep the weight off so I decided to go down the gastric sleeve route. I’m now a 8 days out and I’m feeling good! The first few days are hard but not impossible and the care of the team help you get through it. I’m not sure if Dr Haluk is a magician but I’m already drinking two litres of water and hitting 100grams of protein. I would highly recommend any foreigners who are looking to get the surgery in Turkey to go to Dr Haluk.

Amazing amazing amazing, not a zero compliant or complication.

Right… when I was researching dr Haluk and his amazing team. I found lots and lots of 5* reviews, but provided very little detail about the overall experience. I’m on my final day, and sat in this beautiful hotel, so have time to write a detailed review to explain exactly how amazing dr Dr haluk, aysa, Ezgi, nurses and the cleaners are because they honestly deserve recognition for all the hard work and dedication they put in to make sure your surgery goes smoothly, you feel reassured and overall stress free.

Booking- Burca provided and answered all questions and queries I had through the months before my surgery date. Regardless of the day or time she would always get back to me,she never grew tired of my constant questions. Amazing service !
Day 1- upon arrival in the VIP car was outside the airport waiting for me. From there, they take you straight to the hospital where you are provided a hospital room. During my stay, there was a little wait as it was during a busy period. But the brilliant aysa made sure I felt comfortable and fully at ease by spending time with me. The amazing dietician Ezgi then spent the whole time with me, made sure I had something to eat and reassured me the whole time. As many will be, I was terrified of the surgery, but she spent the whole time reassuring me, answered every question and overall, being one of the nicest person I’ve come across in a long while. The hospital very quickly completes all tests and you’re provided with all forms to read and sign.
Day 2-operation day. I was taken down for the endoscopy, which was quick and painless. Then I was immediately taken in for surgery. Once I began to wake up, I felt a little panicked as many will do but was completely fine and taken back to my room . Dr Haluk tried to come and see me but I was fast asleep! I had some gas pain but overall the pain was around 5/10, defiantly a lot easier than a c section to provide a comparison! Nurses were amazing at providing me with pain killers when needed, when ringing the bell they would come within seconds and the hotel was clean.
Day 3- Saturday, I was visited by aysa and haluk. They left me feeling in such a positive mood and confirmed everything went smoothly. I was encouraged by nurses to walk around a lot which I also recommend to keep gas pains at bay. The cleaner would come in regularly to maintain everything and was so kind and sweet. A purple drink test is done to check all is well internally.
Day 4- I felt pretty much myself again, which I did not expect to happen so soon! I had another visit from dr haluk and aysa which was lovely and had my drain taken out. They also FaceTimed me later on to check I was ok ! We are honestly so blessed to have them both

Day 4 - the nutritionist Ezgi came to the hospital to provide me with all the information, I needed nutrition wise, and provided me with a booklet, which covered everything we need to know for the next few months. We then got the VIP transport to my hotel. During travelling Ezgi informed me to contact her any time at any time, and she will reply as quickly as she can. She honestly goes above and beyond ! I arrived at the hotel and it was absolutely beautiful. The VIP driver took my luggage in for me. I was show to my room which is also lovely. The hotel provides surgery soup for the second stage of eating, which I recommend. I also recommend going to a shop which is on the right when you come out of the hotel and then the first right again. This is where you can buy your protein drinks that will last you for the next few days until you go home. I messaged aysa to ask where I could get my nails done to which she replied immediately with a shops location and stated she called and found a time for me.without me even asking ! She’s just so great. Also, when I was having difficulty with translating she would step in to help me in a heartbeat. Such a angel

Day 5 and 6- at this point, I had forgot I was in Turkey for surgery and felt like I was on holiday! I spent my time walking next to the ocean, which is five minutes away from the hotel. EzgI also organised for all the vitamins I wanted to be sent to the hotel.

I have to give a detailed review to honestly explain how amazing Dr Haluk and his team honestly are. Surgery wise, you are dealing with a man that has over 35 years experience, has zero bad reviews and honestly cares about his clients. They have thought through every detail and made sure they have implemented something. A dedicated dietician that takes her job extremely seriously and full of kindness.Aysa who is all round Girlboss and there any second you need her. Nurses that are by your side in seconds. Kind and sweet cleaners. Great service from Burca who was so informative. VIP driver who is always on time. I hope I have mentioned everyone as they deserve recognition. LOVE YOU

From start to finish was excellent.
Asya who organised everything for me was amazing, kind and very friendly, she speaks very good English so translating wasn't ever a problem.
Prof. Dr. Haluk is so experienced, I always felt as though I was in the safest hands with him.
I have had zero complications and am beyond happy with my surgery.

From start to finish everything was great, constantly being able to be in touch with someone is a bonus. All hospital staff are lovely and welcoming. Dr Haluk Unalp is a star. So friendly. Comes to check on you. Asya is the friendliest and greets you soon as you are there. The dietitians are so good at their job and helpful when needed. Couldn’t have chosen a better place to go.

I had my gastric sleeve on 5/7/22 and I can tell you with closed eyes their team is the best in the whole of Turkey! I’ve had many surgeries and with Dr Haluk I have no regrets at all I’m so glad I went for him it’s his patients not ££$$ I have friends and family who have had this op and I promise his the best at his job his one of the ones that has the most experience in this industry his very well aware of what he’s doing they are good team I felt like a family with them rather than a doctor patient relationship his so down to earth ! Pls beware of others make sure you do your research and to me it was Dr Haluk if you want to be treated well in every aspect then his the one. I’ve been to most luxury hospitals and doctors in Turkey but I haven’t met a team like this they don’t look down on you they actually make you so comfortable you feel like a part of them.

I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Haluk's clinic. The best bariatric specialist with 35 years of experience. Comprehensive care from the moment of landing in Izmir to surgery and then the hotel stay. The doctor surrounds patients with care and kindness. A wonderful, very kind and warm man. His entire team cares about making the stay in the hospital very comfortable.
Asya is warm and accommodating, ensures proper understanding of medical terms, as well as doing a fantastic job translating and general care.
