First of all, this company should not be doing business in the United states. The model is completely twisted.
It is disgusting to have a business model where the person paying rent and seeking shelter charged for access to listings. The person who is making money should be paying fees. Or how about no fees?
Craigslist doesn't charge fees. The platform is much better than Spare room.

I connected with Colette Newby through SpareRoom in good faith, seeking a stable place to live. I entered into a lodging agreement for a room at 81 Western Road, Newick. As part of the arrangement, I paid a £1250 security deposit upfront and agreed to supply all necessary documentation, including a DBS certificate. I was transparent and cooperative throughout the process.

Despite fulfilling my obligations, Colette has withheld my £1250 deposit without justification. Repeated attempts to resolve this amicably were ignored or dismissed. This has left me in an extremely vulnerable position: I am now homeless, of no fixed address, and struggling, all due to this dishonest and exploitative behavior.

To make matters worse, SpareRoom, the platform through which I found this arrangement, offered absolutely no meaningful support. After waiting over two weeks for a response to my complaint, they simply told me they couldn’t help and referred me to Shelter. This was deeply disappointing and left me feeling abandoned during one of the most difficult periods of my life.

As a vulnerable individual, I relied on both Colette and SpareRoom to act with integrity and decency. Instead, I have been misled, financially exploited, and left without a home.

If you are considering renting through Colette Newby or using SpareRoom to find accommodation, I would strongly urge you to think twice. This experience has caused me significant emotional and financial hardship, and I would not wish it upon anyone else.
