"Received in good condition but poor clarity of procedures"

We received all of our goods in good condition. However we expected better service regarding the following:
1. Clarifying the insurance process - 1st move advised us to give them a vague list of our belongings. So when we went on to fill out the insurance papers, it made no sense at all as the form then asked us to provide value details for our goods. How could we do this as our goods had already been packed and taken and we had provided only a vague list as requested. If any goods had been damaged, how would the vague list have been evidence of contents or of the condition of the contents before shipping?
2. 1st Move were unable to tell us the total cost we would have to pay on arrival to the US. Having paid about 1000GBP in the UK, we had to pay the storage company in New York and also the one in Virginia.

Fast service, prompt replies, good communication even with myself and two others dealing with the move. Told me the importer must clear at customs in person but I then found out that for shipments under a certain value it doesn't have to be (Canada).

Goods packed very well in terms of packaging, but in terms of positioning not so much. Fitting several small items between two larger ones, one of which being hollow, caused two breakages to the larger hollow item, rendering one of the drawers useless and the other fragile. A leg from a chest of drawers also got snapped off. Unfortunately the insurance recommended doesn't cover damage resulting from packing/packaging, only damage in the event of a collision or sinking of the ship carrying the goods.
