I did 2 expeditions with Gumbo's company, one climbing Kilimanjaro, and the other a 3 days experience baboon hunting and living with the Hadzabe hunter gatherer bushmen (check out the Youtuber Fearless & Far, who also worked with Gumbo, for a great vlog on his Hadzabe experience).

From day 1 of our consultation call, Gumbo listened and made sure to understand what I'm looking for in a trip (private, personalized, and off the beaten path) and I'm happy to report that he delivered in every way. We worked closely to modify the itineraries he proposed and communication was always quick and responsive.

I was especially impressed with the teams he chose for both of my trips. The mountain guide, Juma, and the team of porters for my Kilimanjaro expedition exceeded expectations and made my climb one of the best experiences of my life. I will always hold dear those memories of cooking ugali with the team in the kitchen tent, and laughing and learning Swahili numbers and phrases with Juma during our day treks.

Should you choose to climb Kilimanjaro, know that there are many companies out there with fancy websites that show up high on search engines, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are better and not all of them are certified by KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project) to treat porters fairly and humanely. Gumbo's company *is* one of them as he pays his porters a very fair wage. I also believe he does a good job pairing guides and porters according to your personality and wishes, as was the case with me. I highly recommend requesting Juma as your guide and Chaji Boy, as your lead porter, especially if you are a solo traveler. My summit ascent and descent would not have been possible without their attention and dedication.

As for the Hadzabe experience, the Hadzane speaking guide Usuf, along with Doreen, the Swahili-English translator, were legendary companions and made my 3 days an absolute blast and dare I say, even better than my Kilimanjaro climb.

All in all, Tanzania is definitely a country with many more places to explore and experiences to be had, and I will definitely be using Gumbo's services when I return in the near future.
