I've been going to this garage for a short time and have always been looked after by the friendly staff. They never over charge, very reasonable and honest hard workers. I would recommend Clarke and Evans for all repairs big or small, MOT, car servicing etc.

"Taking advantage of a vulnerable customer"

This review is on behalf of my 94 year old uncle. We are very upset with how my vulnerable uncle has been treated by this company and believe their behaviour to be without due care and unethical. My elderly and frail uncle contacted Clarke & Evans after he had an accident that had resulted in a lot of damage to his car. He was overwhelmed by dealing with the situation and had decided he didn’t want to drive any more and no longer wanted the car. The amount of damage was such that the car was likely to be an insurance write-off. Mr Dhutty assessed the vehicle at my uncle’s request, and told my uncle that the cost of repairs significantly exceeded the value of the car and offered to buy it as it was for £2k. The market value of the car without damage was £10,000 (as of September 2024 based on We Buy Any Car). This was obviously not at all in my uncle’s best interests to sell to Clarke & Evans as insurance would either have restored it to the original condition or would have written it off and paid out a settlement of the market value to my uncle.
None of the emails from Mr Dhutty to my uncle explained to my uncle that he would be better off going through insurance and receiving a settlement of the market value, if the insurance company considered repairing it not to be economically viable. There is no rational reason for anyone not to claim in these circumstances. The only times someone might logically make that decision would be if they were concerned about the effect on future insurance premiums which did not apply to my uncle as he was giving up driving entirely. My uncle was overwhelmed and anxious; a responsible company would have made efforts to ensure he was not left worse off by their actions. Mr Dhutty said he told my uncle about the insurance option verbally, but my uncle was in a panic and I do not believe that Mr Dhutty acted appropriately.
Furthermore, despite saying that Clarke & Evans would buy the vehicle, Mr Dhutty in fact processed the purchase in his private name, not through the company. Mr Dhutty has profited from his actions, whilst my uncle has effectively lost about £8,000. This happened in late July and only weeks afterwards my uncle had to move into a care home as he was not able to cope any more in his own home. I believe that Mr Dhutty took advantage of his vulnerability and should have put clearly in writing to my uncle what the consequences of his selling his unrepaired car in this way would be, and that he would be much better off making an insurance claim. There is nothing in any of Mr Dhutty’s emails to my uncle explaining this. There is a Code of Practise within the motor industry for how to deal with potentially vulnerable customers and this should have been followed. In contrast, another organisation that dealt with my uncle in recent months had requested that someone else from the family be informed of any decisions being made, before they were finalised, for the protection of all parties.
Clarke & Evans will no doubt say they have not acted illegally, but we believe they have certainly acted unethically and without due care. I hope that in any future dealings with potentially vulnerable customers they behave better. If they imagine how they would want one of their elderly relatives to be treated, that would be a good starting point. I feel very sad for my uncle; he is funding his own care and £8,000 is a lot of money to lose.

"Car repair."

Had only just received our car back and someone went into the side of the vehicle while parked. Once again Dutty AJ and Kim come to the rescue. They put us in touch with an insurance claim company AX which was excellent and the hire car was first class. Both Kim and AX kept us well informed on progress. Cannot fault the team at Clarke and Evans their work is excellent and the car was returned looking like brand new and just come out of the show room. "Helpful and honest"

The staff came to look at the car very promptly on the driveway after we had a bump, were clear and honest about costs and how reliable it would be with and without repairs. They also followed up by taking it to their garage for us for a full inspection, all this without charge and with no pressure to go ahead with repair. Most of all they were kind, which after the shock of the bump to the car was really appreciated.

Time wasted. Called day before to ask for a repair estimate. Lady says yes and sounded very helpful. Come anytime.

Question is simple here, why not say to me on the phone that there would be a charge? Wasted journey here. Drove 7 mins from this place and found a reputable garage who did the quote, for free.

Just called in today , no appointment but they always make time for their customers, my headlights were out, they fixed them on the spot, also in January they collected my car for MOT and returned it all completed , highly recommended 100% the best garage around , I wouldn’t go anywhere else big high five to Paul every time

I like the fact that ,you speak with the mechanic on collection that serviced your vehicle.
