Our 8-year-old has been taking Writing Symphony online classes for over a year (since May 2022) to supplement regular schooling. As we are raising our daughter as a trilingual child with a heavy focus on non-English languages at home, we hoped the courses could help her develop a strong English grammar, vocabulary, and writing foundation to benefit her long-term.

Writing Symphony has absolutely helped our daughter improve her skills in those areas. The instruction for the year-long class is systematic, focusing on developing the kids' ability to extract critical information from non-fiction and fiction essays and summarizing them using proprietary outlining strategies, parts of speech and grammar, and using those skills to build complex and engaging sentences. The weekly lesson is built around a fiction or non-fiction essay 1-2 pages long. New vocabulary and practice are built into each class as well. Weekly homework includes pre-lesson reading and writing. Overall, the curriculum and instruction are solid and effective for helping kids improve their reading comprehension and writing. The homework routine helps establish good studying habits for younger kids before they get to upper elementary when the workload generally increases in public and private schools in the United States.

As a parent, I sat close by my daughter while she had lessons. I recommend this, especially for 7-10-year-olds, so the parents can understand the curriculum, help their child with homework, etc. Also, give your child ownership of their work, especially after a couple of months of lessons. While this is sometimes hard to do, we found it encouraging to our daughter and ensure she continues to be engaged. She is now very aware of how advanced her writing is compared to other school kids and takes pride in it, even if she is only sometimes excited about doing the homework.

I strongly recommend anyone, especially while your child is still young, to sign up for the year-round courses and the short-term skill-focused summer camps. The class size is tiny. Our daughter started with Harmony Level (designed for grades 1-2) with only three other kids. All the instructors were very good with kids and experienced. Writing Symphony also hosts monthly virtual Q&As, which allow asking questions about the curriculum, tips, etc. Their classes are definitely a good investment and will bear fruit in a few years.

It has been 8 years since we first found the writing class for my daughter, Allyse, with Ms MJ Gleichman at Writing Symphony. At the time, my daughter was in an all day inclusive gifted class at her elementary school. She was doing very well in all school subjects except for writing, which she struggled with and was mostly getting 2's and sometimes even 1's on her writing assignments with feedback from her school teacher such as "Need more details". My daughter, a 3rd grader at that time, had no idea what her teacher meant nor what to do to improve her writing. Regular school writing curriculum does not do a good job in teaching kids how to write. We were so blessed to have found Writing Symphony's writing class which teaches kids step by step how to with specific proven methods including choosing strong verbs and adjectives, using various phrases, and clauses. My daughter's writing started improving after taking the writing class with Writing Symphony and it was only about a year later, she started getting only 4's on her writing assignments at school. My daughter is now an 11th grader, and is getting A's in her AP Language Art class. She also gets A's on her essays in all her other AO classes, whether history or psychology. Her essays are always phenomenal due to the writing skills she learned when she was younger at Writing Symphony. If you are looking to help your kids excel at writing, look no further, Writing Symphony is the place!
