"Horrible experience from start to…"

Horrible experience from start to finish! I don’t know what has happened with this company since the last review was written in 2019, but it is a far cry from what it used to be.

I had several important paintings valued at $175,000 to be shipped from London to San Francisco. I have always used another reputable UK company but had a few minor hiccups with the last two shipments, so decided to give the British Shop a try. Unfortunately, they, and their sales associate Courtney Jones, were recommended by a local freight company that l have worked with for years. However, the freight company rep had no experience with the British Shop before, but knew Ms. Jones.

From the beginning, it was made very clear to Ms. Jones that was a very definite deadline for the receipt of the paintings. It took them days to even prepare the shipment as Ms. Jones and her boss argued about the use of the local freight company in San Francisco. So, ridiculous politics initially held up the shipment.

It went from bad to worse when they decided to ship DHL commercial rather than by a freight courier as is standard practice with such very valuable items. As soon as the paintings arrived in the USA (New York), customs held them up for days due to Ms. Jones failure to supply the correct paperwork. Once released from US Customs, DHL held the paintings for another week due to a backlog.

I paid for a broker (the local air freight company), freight shipping, etc only to receive none of these services in addition to severe, and worrying, delays with the shipment.

I emailed Ms. Jones countless times during this stressful experience and she never, ever replied! Unbelievable! The sending gallery and the local freight company also tried unsuccessfully to reach her.

Once the paintings finally arrived in San Francisco, l was supposed to receive white glove delivery including the unpacking and disposal of packing materials. This is what l paid for, but not what l received. I got threshold service.

When the gallery, myself, and the freight company tried to get an explanation from Ms. Jones for this, she was extremely quick to finally reply to an email and blame the local freight company.

When the gallery in London tried to investigate what happened, a British Shop rep claimed that the delivery team was at my house for several hours dealing with a very large painting and that they did not have time to provide white glove service. They even took a photo of a house and claimed it was my house, but it wasn’t even located in San Francisco. So deceptive!

In reality, they were at my home for 90 minutes dealing with the large painting that wouldn’t easily fit through the door. When l asked the about unpacking and materials disposal, they cried foul and claimed they were not instructed to provide white glove delivery. Interesting….the British Shop rep claimed that it was because they ran out of time.

The only consolation for me is that the shipping gallery, and a few other important London galleries l work with, all expressed that they have had nothing but problems with the British Shop as of late. Let this be a warning, especially if you are shipping extremely valuable items.

I have been using the British Shop over the last 3 years to handle all of my higher end and more complex shipping needs internationally and can only recommend them for providing an excellent full service which prioritises the highest standards.

I can rely on the team there to respond quickly with detailed and competitive shipping quotes, as well as excellent professional advice. I know that if a consignment is booked with them then I don’t need to worry.
