"Canny Collar for a reactive rescue dog"

I ordered a Canny Collar for my reactive dog and this is my user experience after ca. one week of using it with him.

My dog is an adult rescue with traumatic past and signs of physical mistreatment. In the beginning he was extremely reactive when leashed, so we've had to patiently practice our walks. When he gets into the reactive mode, he redirects his aggression to me and my other dog. What we found is that he needs constant reassurance from me, and the best way is constant gentle contact on a lead – just like gentle contact with the bit of a horse – and he is much more relaxed and doesn't necessarily react at all unless the trigger is very strong. We have been using a slip lead with a snout loop for this and our walks have been pretty good with it.

However, sometimes my dog needs to be muzzled, for example on vet visits. His muzzles don't sit comfortably on top of the slip lead, so I was looking for an alternative halter-style option where the leash attachment would be behind his head instead of under the jaw – he reacts badly to that. I found Canny Collar and was happy to learn that its operating principle is very similar to the slip lead!

We have been practicing using Canny Collar for over one week now, and my first impressions are all positive! The collar is easy to put on and adjust. The nose loop sits flatly around the snout and doesn't seem to bother my dog when he's walking. He has learned that he can take it off by yawning and pointing his nose down when he is waiting for me to get my jacket off after a walk, which makes him very happy. The loop falling off during walking is not a problem, because he walks at a heel and I hold his leash short so that he can feel me at the other end of it. He has been calm and relaxed with the Canny Collar from the very first walk, which is better than I expected! We have not introduced any of his muzzles into the combo yet – that needs to be done slowly – but as the Canny Collar sits flat around the dog's face and the leash attachment is behind the head, I don't see why that wouldn't work.

All in all, in my experience the Canny Collar:
- is easy to put on and adjust for the dog
- works well for a +30 kg reactive dog
- is comfortable for the dog to wear
- should work well with a muzzle, although we've not tried this yet.
