"Kangaroo Advice"

It was comforting to have a volunteer advise me on how to deal with a kangaroo on my property who appeared to have an injury. The lovely volunteer also went out of her way to put me in contact with a knowledgeable lady living in my area who could also help with assisting the kangaroo. It is good to know there is help out there for our wildlife if it is needed and helpful to know who to contact.

"I found a baby magpie grunt on the…"

I found a baby magpie grunt on the ground all covered with ants.
I got the ants off it and Save Our Wildlife.
The volunteer could only give me instructions as to what to do as it was Sunday afternoon and I could not get it to any Vet that was open.
The volunteer booked me in for somebody to pick it up in the morning but he couldn't get there until around lunch time by which time I had already got it to a Vet in my area which was open then.
I did that because it was getting late and the poor baby bird had not been fed for a whole day.
The volunteer was late because he had many other pick ups first and got held up.
I wasn't happy that I left the baby bird with the Vet that I did because they didn't seem to know much about baby birds.
I paicked and took it there because it hadn't been fed for such a long time.
It was just a shame that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon when no one could pick it up until the next day.
The volunteer who was to pick it up the next day was obviously overworked.
The service was good but it is obvious that more wildlife rescue volunteers are sorely needed.
It is a great job that they do, but if more people were to volunteer, everything would run much more smoothly.

"Thank Goodness for SOWFI !"

I’m maybe biased here after having started volunteering for SOWFI later in 2023.
I want sure what to expect but I’m quite amazed at the effort put in by the whole team in this excellent organisation.

Rescuing can be surprisingly demanding on those involved, but the public, the Vets and our management make it all so much easier.
Thanks from me and our wildlife. 🙂

"Injured bird on the beach"

We collected a bird from the beach that was struggling and contacted the wildlife foundation. It was a Sunday but still we were attended to immediately and given great advice on how to care for the bird overnight so that someone could collect it the following morning. They answered all our calls as we had never done this before and needed reassurance. Proud to say the bird lived through the night as we kept it warm in the laundry and then the wildlife warriors took it and gave it fluids . We shall be saving their number for future saves.

"Exceptional, professional and quick..."

Long Story Short...

Found a native possum in dire need. Without access to a car, or knowledge of which vet to take it to, I was desperate. Called "Save Our Wildlife Foundation" explaining the situation and that I was without personal transport. Animal "Ambulance" arrived within 40 minutes. Two guys did a quick assessment and decided which vet would give it the best chance of survival. 20 minutes later recieved a text saying that the possums injuries was too severe and that the vet had already decided to do the humane thing.

Sad ending, but for the best. The volunteer on the phone was quick and professional. The "ambulance people" were even better. If you find an injured or sick animal in desperate need... call the "Save Our Wildlife Foundation" immediately. They know what they are doing.

Short Story Long...

I live in South Australia, in the Adelaide Hills. At 12 midday I stumbled across a native possum trying to hide behind my rubbish bin in it's shadow (as a noctural animal this is obviously very unusual). It's face was covered in flies and when I waved them away it was obvious its face had been torn open by another animal during the night. It was in serious trouble and suffering terribly.

Without access to a car I immedately got my phone and tried to call someone, but rapid googling resulted in being frustrated as most things that popped up was unsuitable. Finally "Save Our Wildlife Foundation" popped up with a phone number to call. The person on the other end picked up almost immediately. I explained the situation and that I couldn't get it quickly to a vet. They told me that they would see if a local ambulance was available and that he would call back.

While I waited I got a pet travel cage I had and (with gloves) moved the possum inside. Got rid of all of the flies and covered it with a sheet and moved it to a shaded area. No "talking to it with a soothing voice" or anything as I knew anything else I did would just add to its trauma. The foundation called back and said an ambulance was already on it's way. So I waited at the gate to signal them when they arrived.

About 20 minutes later two guys arrived in a van clearly marked. I told them what happened and took them to the sheet covered pet cage. The senior guy (Michael) quickly assessed the possum (it was as I thought, the eyes were massively damaged) and said he knew which vet to go to in order to give it the best chance.

They had apparently come from a house to rescue some ducks and their ducklings that was in someone's swimming pool when they got the call about my possum... which had taken priority (they would return later for the ducks after taking the possum to the vet). It turns out that they were called direct and that my possum had not even been put officially onto the system yet and yet they had dropped everything to respond ASAP.

Michael and the other guy transferred the possum from my pet travel cage into their own box and left.

I told Michael that if the possum could be saved I would be happy to set it up with a possum box (or whatever) after recovery. Michael said either way he would send me a text but was honest with me about its chances (not being great). Merely 20 minutes later Michael kept his word and I received the sad news via text... the possums injuries were too extensive and it had already been put to sleep humanely. It was unfortunate... but I was grateful that it's suffering was at an end and had not been drawn out unnecessarily.

Despite the outcome, the whole process was outright amazing and without time wastage... Professional, fast and exceptional on every level, I can't criticise a single thing about anything that happened from first contact, to final contact. The sheer speed of everyone involved was remarkable.

This foundation is fantastic for anyone who cares about our native wildlife and animals in general. If you find any animal in need... don't hesitate, call "Save Our Wildlife Foundation". Regardless of the situation... they will know what needs to be done.

5 out of 5 stars. Flawless.

"Saving Our Wildlife"

I wanted to save the life of a baby possum and sadly I couldn’t, but this was not the fault of the person who answered my call seeking advice. She told me what I should do until I could reach a wildlife vet but the baby possum had internal injuries and succumbed. Until I advised of this outcome, I received many texts with information about how to feed the baby possum as it grew. So I can strongly recommend calling this group of volunteers when faced with an injured or abandoned member of an Australian wildlife species that you want to rescue.
