Me, my partner & two kids collected the RV from Los Angeles. After a quick tour round the RV & a crash course on how to use the propane for the fridge & hob, how to drive with the gear options, how to turn the generator on which didn't work (needed resetting) and how the water pump worked - tap trickled for a second then got switched off.
We were then on our way. 208 miles in (4¹/² hour later) we arrived at our first destination before our big adventure to Yosemite and other parts of California.
Unfortunately it wasn't a great start - the ignition for the hob didn't work, the shower wasn't cleaned, the lock on the rear storage was just for show and the biggest issue we had was that the WATER PUMP DIDN'T WORK!!!
DAY 1 THE WATER PUMP HAS FAILED!!
DID A PROFESSIONAL SERVICE GET DONE ON A KEY COMPONENT OF THE RV?
I spent hours calling multiple people on the travellers assistance helpline, one potential option was to travel back to Bakersfield 2 hours in the wrong direction but it was Sunday and wasn't guaranteed. I asked if they could bring me a new RV that was in working order. This was DENIED due to it not being an emergency.
In my opinion it was an emergency due to leaving the following day for Yosemite which has no hookups. This would have meant: no way of cleaning the dishes, no way to flush the toilet, no showers and a perfect environment for the bears to smell any unwashed dishes.
I asked to speak to a supervisor this was denied.
I got told they would call me back at 9am the following day....
Day 2 THE CALL TO ME NEVER ARRIVED.
I then had to call multiple times on my vacation to sort the issue out at this point we should have been on our way to YOSEMITE. BUT WE WERE STUCK IN LIMBO!!
Cruise America did give me an option to collect a new RV up from Los Angeles. This blew my mind! They were willing for me to drive back the Wrong way . But we're unwilling to drive my direction to sort out there own mess. CRAZY!
I managed to speak to a lady who wasn't a robot and understood our problems - we now had 2 options to resolve the matter.
Option 1 was take a detour to Fresno where they may have a spare RV
Option 2 if no RV was available a repair could be done.
Unfortunately no RV was available so we had to get to Fresno by 3pm, it was 1pm at this point! .
We got to Fresno in the nick of time. The water pump was beyond repair but we got fixed.
We landed @ Yosemite at 7pm and from that point had a great time.
In total we lost valuable time spent together, a very upset partner & kids, a full day loet in Yosemite where we had plans for the day.
What we got was...
Really poor support from Cruise America apart from one lady after multiple attempts speaking to what I thought were robots reading from a script.
A great experience from the guys at the repair shop.
A broken water pump on day one.
A mucky floor and shower tray.
A rusty wire on the hob so the ignition didn't work.
No lockable storage on the outside.
After returning the rv I did ask for some form of compensation for the stress, losing pretty much a day and a half. I had a figure in mind of $500 a fair amount.
I got offered $200 but I'd have to sign a waver not to escalate... Basically hush money!
On this vacation all the Americans we've met have been hospitable, kind, generous and a great example of how humans should be.
The same can not be said about Cruise America.
Big shout out to the manager on the Monday who tried to support.
Judy who I dealt with today you were only trying to do your job but I won't be silenced by $200.
The guys over at the repair shop over in fresno quick and efficient.
And the lady I spoke to in the call centre.
Final note we had a great experience and it won't dampen the rest of the vacation.
Just feel they should be ready to react to sanitary issues but they don't class this as an emergency I beg to differ
