FairCar Iceland

"Very good rental experience"
February 2016
First, I want to thank FairCar for their trust. Indeed, when we arrived in Iceland, we didn't have 300€ on our account to rent the car. However, they tried everything they can to let us leave with their car. Eventually, they proposed to let us at our hostel and the day after we had a Renault Clio.
The car is really awesome (Garmin is VERY useful in Iceland), we didn't have any troubles with it.
Our biggest fear, I have to admit, was the check out. With all those bad reviews we had seen on this website, we thought we made a bad call by choosing FairCar. But they are very quick and serious. We paid 80€ because my friend smoked in the car (which is totally forbidden by FairCar), and we are really sorry about it by the way, we figured it out on our last days in Iceland (read carefully FairCar laws).
To conclude I would highly recommend FairCar to anyone willing to enjoy an amazing experience in Iceland.
From two French who felt in love with Iceland, especially thank to FairCar, hoping to see you again.
Julien.

"Highly recommended"
We had no issues renting a car with FairCar. The entire process was quite smooth and they were the only company who would accept our debit card. On top of that, the staff were all extremely friendly and easy to communicate with. The car itself stood up very well against the Icelandic conditions. I would highly recommend FairCar when driving in Iceland.

"TERRIBLE - Charged exorbent amount for repairs 6 months later"
I booked online through "Economy" - but they forward the rental to the local company which was FairCar.
I rented a car for a week at $93 USD in April of last year. I was informed the car was damaged 6 weeks after I returned it. When they accepted the car from me, they had no complaint and greeted farewell me after they dropped me off at the airport politely. I inquired at the time they sent me that notice, and there was no reply. 4 months later, my credit card was charged $900 USD for repairs. Of which I again inquired - with no response again.
I told my credit card what happened, and the credit card did not get a response either within a 90 day window, leading them to declined the charge.
Now almost a year later, FairCar has sent a collection agency after me ... without a court judgement. Terrible, nightmare. Terrible business practices. I would have gladly paid for any damages if there were any at the time I returned it ... but I can tell you there were none. And the fact they constantly IGNORE my inquires - but yet continually plague me with redtape - is quasi bullying me. They should be held liable for my lost time in dealing with this nonsense.
Update 1/28/2016 in response FairCar's response:
In response to your reply below, I was only shown pictures of damages you were claiming in your email months after I returned the vehicle. I received no such photos prior to my rental, furthermore not only do I have rental car insurance through American Express, I did purchase insurance from the 3rd party website I booked the rental with. Their website said you required insurance - but didn't mention I could purchase insurance from you, though at the time of the rental you preferred I use your in house insurance. So I paid for it online, it cost half as much as the the insurance you offered me at the time of the rental but had twice the coverage than your in house policy. Secondly, had you not waited a year to charge my credit card and operated in a timely fashion maybe one of many insurance policies purchased to cover this would entertain a claim. Coming back after a year and just charging the credit card blindly is basically defrauding the credit card company - which is mostly certainly why they declined payment. ... and also, you have ignored all my requests for more information, in addition to the credit cards request for information, which is why they have declined payment.
It's too bad you need a public shaming review to get a reply from you. But at this point I am not even willing to bother sending any information to my insurance, or any of the purchased insurance, because I am fairly certain someone else who did rent the car after me purchased your in house insurance and damaged the car months later - and now you are looking for an outside claim to cover yourselves. And I am not interested in filing a fraudulent claim on your behalf.
I am a fair guy, and would have filed a claim immediately after returning the vehicle if there was damage - It would have cost me nothing at the time. I already paid for complete damage coverage. But you waited a year and slipped the charge in sneakily into my credit card - and I do not wish to support those who wish to defraud me or my insurance providers ...

"Great price and good service"
The price was what initially attracted my party and I to rent from Faircar. Very competitive especially compared to the 'bigger brands' available at Keflavik.
A great pick up and drop off service was available for my party, between the airport and Faircar's offices a five minute drive away, although it was not very clear that this was included.
The staff we met were very helpful and friendly, offering extra information about Reykjavik and the surroundings for our benefit.

"Untrustworthy company faircar"
We rented in June 2015 a VW Caddy Campervan for 11 days. By returning the car on our last day the first problems. We were on time at the office, but from the company faircar nobody was there. Also a couple (dutch?) was waiting for pick up, they were in hurry about their flight and tried 30min to catch someone from faircar by phone to bring us all to the airport.
Finally a young, sleepy man was coming. We requested him, together with us examine our car. But he refused in statement of no interest and also he is not responsible for that. Also it was not possible to confirm the returning with our signature.
Two weeks after returning from Iceland followed the unpleasant surprise. An email from faircar accused us, that there is a damage on the front, left car wing. The damage cost is € 800,- additionaly € 170,- any fee. Also he sended us photos taken two days after our returning. On 21/06/2015 we left Iceland, and in the “main summary” from faircar the damage date is 26/06/2015. In the conditions of contracts faircar reserve one`s rights the costumer is responsible for the car until faircar is checking the car. This is not fairness as against partners (“fair”car?).
Even though we have a legal protection insurance in Austria it was not possible about the legal situation to come to our right. The burden of proof is in the hand of the costumer and we couldn`t evidence, not cause the damage. Even the European Consumerism is powerless to this hanky-pankys. They said, without signature by returning(is usual by faircar!), actually it could be, that the costumer had to pay the completely car, if the lessor claims the car was not brought back.
Though we didn`t caused the damage, but faircar hold the impertinence to order a debt collecting ageny and finally we had to pay € 1.207,-
Don`t let be fooled of this company. On trustpilot the positive reviews are responded embellished by faircar, and the negatives ? Why is there no response ?
On facebook there is a trustpilot status of reviews which is not reality!
Iceland:Yes! FAIRCAR: NO,NEVER AGAIN !

"Friendly crew and great cars"
Faircar always has quite new cars, all well equipped. Their service is friendly and to point. The complementary Garmin is great. I've been renting with them since 2013 in Iceland and due to the reasonable prices and great cars I won't think about booking at another company

"Very friendly and informative, and easy transfers, although the car was a little past its best"
This is a small set up meaning you get a friendly, informal service that was very pleasant. The price was low compared to larger rental stations in Iceland, which was our main reason for renting from them in the first place, and the car came with a portable sat nav. The car itself was basic and past its best but worked fine and did the job. Getting through the paperwork could've been slicker but the friendly service and low cost more than make up for that. We were transferred and returned to the airport for no extra cost. I hire a lot of cars for work from Avis so this is what I'm comparing against. I would definitely recommend and use again.

"Great service, great car."
Thor and the crew at FairCar Iceland were absolutely wonderful. I needed to change the time and location of our original pickup which they accommodated graciously, and upon pickup they were extremely friendly and thorough in explaining the rules of the road in Iceland. They also offered some great advice in terms of sights to see, places to visit, and some of their favorite restaurants. The car itself was perfect - we are a family of 5 (with 3 kids under 6 years old) and our car was a VW Caddy van which fit us all perfectly. As the roads were often snowy and icy, I very much appreciated the studded ice tires - the van didn't skid or slip one little bit. All in all, a fabulous car rental experience with great service and we will definitely use FairCar again on our next trip!

"very professional with a personal touch"
After having googled through many websites and running out of time, we decided to rent the car via faircar.is. Einar met us at the airport, brought to the office 5 min from the airport, went through all the formalities, he even gave us some gps directions for some places mostly only local people go to (LOVED A LOT!) and Garmin was included for no extra charge, we were also provided with lots of additional information, which we found useful throughout our stay. The winter tires were very good, which made the driving in very strong wind safe. The safety deposit was released in 3 to 4 days time.
Having rented cars in many countries, this was the most personal approach we have gotten so far.
