I bought two Scalextric cars from Collectables R Us for my son as a Christmas present, so he could play with them over the Christmas period. We only use the track every few years so, before purchasing, I checked with the salesperson that they would work on a digital track, out-of-the-box and without modification. The salesperson confirmed they would.
After spending several hours building the track on Christmas day, when we tried to use the cars, we discovered that they wouldn’t work without a digital chip, so it was very frustrating!
A few days later, I went back to the shop with the cars: immaculate, unused, in their original boxes expecting to receive a full refund. However, the owner refused. He almost gleefully pointed out that the receipt states “you can only return non-faulty goods for store credit or exchange”. As the cars weren’t faulty, he would not issue a refund – even if his member of staff had unwittingly mis-sold the cars. To add insult to injury, he said why should he believe I had first checked with his colleague – because “he didn’t know me from Adam?!”
Salespeople sometimes make mistakes and mis-inform customers – that’s not the issue. This issue here is that all good businesses rectify their mistakes and treat their customers with respect. They don’t question the integrity of those spending money in their stores (in my case £99.98) in front of other shoppers. I supported his business by giving him my custom, something I certainly won’t do again and would recommend to others considering purchasing items at Collectables R Us to think twice.
Buyer beware: if there’s a chance you might need to return an item to Collectables R Us, shop elsewhere!
