"Sunhero: A year in review - the good, the bad and the ugly"
Since TrustPilot has a character limit and this is a long review, I have put the full review here: pastebin dot com forward slash u5ex055x there are photos of the installation on the google review, please search google maps for sunhero. The review here contains excerpts from the full review.
## Installation
The installation occurred in two stages with two separate teams and initial work took around 3 days. First, a team comes and attaches tracks / mounts to the roof to which the solar panels will be attached the next day, they seemed professional and friendly. It appears the two teams did not communicate either directly or via anyone at Sunhero. Then the day after, another team of installers come who are electricians and bring the solar panels, battery and all of the other pieces of equipment required to finish the installation. The second team came to the house and were very professional and friendly. It was after this installation was “complete”, and before the team left, that I noticed the first problem. Because the first team did not have the solar panels with them, and I’m guessing that they did not know the physical size of the panels that the other team was going to bring with them, they had installed the panel mounts so that once they were in place they overhung the edge of the roof meaning that any rainwater running off the roof would no longer fall into the gutter of that roof. This of course is a major problem, particularly because we have a water tank that collects rainwater from the gutter. I pointed it out (I’m sure they must have noticed themselves though, but they weren’t to blame, Sunhero were because they did not coordinate the teams), and one of the installers agreed with me that it was a problem and he said they wanted it to be “perfect”. They came back the next day and moved the panels slightly so they did not overhang the gutter. It is not clear to me whether they had to make more holes in the roof to accomplish this change. I hope to discover this when I finally when I get a professional to inspect the roof. After this change the system was turned on, they set us up with the app on our smart phones to monitor it and left.
## Using The System
After using the system for the first couple of weeks we were shocked at how low the energy production was. We got in touch with the project manage at Sunhero and he agreed that it didn’t look right. It was at this point that I pointed out that there were trees casting a shadow over the solar panels, and that we lived on a hill which affected the way in which direct sunlight was hitting the panels. It became clear pretty quickly that they had installed at least half of the solar panels in completely the wrong place, pointing away from the sun and that shadows were being cast over the other half. Sunhero realised they had screwed up and offered to install devices that would try and minimise the affect of the shadows being caused by the trees for free. We agreed to this, however, it is not clear if Sunhero installed these devices on the panels that actually needed them, because no one actually checked to see which half of the system was being hit by shadows. I also took it upon myself to check how sunlight was hitting the panels due to the position of the sun in the sky. For a few days I observed the sun and realised that the other half of the solar panels would be exposed to a lot more sunlight if they were placed on a completely different part of the roof. I took pictures of the roof and explained my findings to the project manager and he agreed that they should be moved. I had basically done the work that Sunhero should have done myself. They sent the same team that originally installed them engineers to move them, and you could tell that they weren’t happy about having to come back, and who could blame them. I asked Sunhero if they would repair the roof that now had holes in it due to the panels initially being installed in the wrong place and they said no, they would not repair the roof.
## Damage To Our property
The installation resulted in various types of damage to the property. First, there is potential damage where one half of the panels had to be moved because they had been installed overhanging the gutter. As mentioned I do not know if they had to make holes in the roof here twice. Then, there is the part of the roof where the panels no longer exist due to being moved. We have screws sticking out of the roof here and I have been told by an architect that as the screws degrade it will almost certainly cause more damage to the roof...
