I've been building PC's for myself and friends since the late seventies, and the one thing I've always stressed is BACKUP your stuff or you'll lose it. So, did I backup my 2 TB hard disk? Heck no, and sure enough, it puked and died.
Tried my own recovery, but had no luck. And of course there were essential financial files and irreplaceable personal pix on the disk. I did a web search, and found Outsource Data Recovery on the web. They've got a tiered pricing system, so I tried the easiest and cheapest option first.

Because the drive was so badly damaged a simple recovery wasn't possible so I authorized the next step, a full recovery and file load on a replacement disk I provided. Now this is not a cheap process - but you need to ask how valuable and important is your data?

They kept me posted at every step of the way by email and text message, as well as phone calls. Then they uploaded recovered filed to a secure cloud server for me to review and approve before loading them on the replacement hard drive.

It took about 2-3 weeks , but I was not in a time critical situation. They do offer rapid turnaround recovery for an extra fee.

I recommend them highly; they're based in Cleveland Ohio so you aren't dealing with some third world bozo, and they were efficient, thorough and courteous throughout the whole process.

And while I've learned my lesson about backups, I would definitely use them again if needed.

Initially I felt like the pricing on the website was very misleading. I chose this company based on the price explanation, but received a shocking quote. I did express this to them and they worked with me. Still the price was very different than I had expected when I first chose them. But at that point I did not have more time to research other options and my hardware was already at their office across the country. They did their job from that point on. They were easy to communicate with and helpful overall. And maybe the end cost is competitive, I am not sure..it was just different than presented on the site that caught my attention in the first place.
