"be ready to throw your money away"

I have been a loyal customer of John Pye Auctions for over 5 years, but my most recent experience(last 2 years )has completely shattered any trust I once had in this company.

I purchased several items in their latest auction, including Acer Chromebooks (Lot 517/387) and Kodak Cameras (Lot 443). While I understand the "sold as seen" nature of auction purchases, John Pye’s lack of accountability and their handling of this situation has been utterly appalling.

Misleading Descriptions:
The Chromebooks arrived without chargers, despite the listing photos clearly showing them. The customer service team dismissively claimed that the pictures were just to "show the items powering up.", but usually in the past they always specified if the peripherals was in or not. How is a bidder supposed to know that essential accessories shown in the photos won’t be included, especially when the descriptions give no such warning?

Shocking Lack of Quality Control(here we are close to a fraud):
The Kodak Cameras in Lot 443 were an absolute disgrace. One of them was entirely non-functional, missing a charger socket altogether—leaving a gaping hole where it should be! This isn’t normal wear and tear; it’s a catastrophic defect that should have been flagged immediately. The camera even bore a "JPTE Checked" sticker, which is supposedly a mark of inspection. What exactly did your team "check"? It’s clear they didn’t even bother with a basic examination, it had a hole underneath!!!

Blame Shifting and Poor Customer Support:
When I raised these issues with customer service, they hid behind the "sold as seen" clause and told me I should have attended a viewing. Not everyone has the ability to attend in person, and if your listings are this unreliable, why bother including photos or "checked" labels?.....considering that the auction was 700km in the north, if is this don't sell over the web

A History of Negligence:
This isn’t the first time I’ve had issues with John Pye Auctions. Last Christmas, I purchased a number of items, and two of them (worth £30 each) were missing from the delivery. When I raised the matter, the customer service team responded with nothing more than a photograph of my items in a box as “proof” of delivery and refused to investigate further. That response was lazy and dismissive, and I ended up losing money with no recourse.

This experience reeks of negligence and a lack of respect for customers. John Pye Auctions is effectively saying, “We’ll take your money, but don’t expect even basic standards of honesty or inspection.”

I will never bid with John Pye Auctions again and strongly advise others to avoid this company at all costs. The risks are not just inherent to auctions—they are amplified by John Pye’s complete lack of professionalism and accountability.

0/5 – Avoid Like the Plague.

"Poor and misleading"

Poor and misleading. On the website, a travel system with car seat and Isofix base have been advertised with a RRP of £499 (which is inflated). Once the package arrived, the only items in there was the car seat and Isofix base - this is not a travel system. Stop scamming your customers and advertise items correctly. Returning this and never using again.

Edit (after reply) - I would have attended to see the item, however there was no option to view for this lot. Therefore get your advertising right!

"Way too much time spent on John Pye"

I’ve been using John Pye for a couple of months and have won quite a lot of their lots (50 plus). Whilst I fully understand they can’t check items most of the stuff I have won has originated from John Lewis who should be ashamed of themselves for the broken and used / dirty items they send for sale. Needless to say these have been binned. A lot has gone to charity as well. Also electrical hair items from god knows where; being broken and full of hair go straight in the bin. I have had several items missing from lots which have either been sent on to me or part refunded the lot. I have to say the customer service has always been very good. I would not recommend using Birmingham as they take nearly two weeks to send items quoting ‘very busy auctions’ not acceptable and neither is the service from FedEx that they use. I was asked to write a review by Jenna who sent me the link to do so. I have not received an incentive to write this.

"Don't buy anything from these scammers…"

Don't buy anything from these scammers . They sell fakes . I bought 3 hoodies and they sent out very cheap Fakes and I was told this by Chesterfield staff " who told you they were fakes Armani " i was told by staff you're not getting any money back .
We need written proof from Armani what a disgrace they are . And many items go missing or stolen in layman's terms
Don't buy any electrical items they are dangerous .

"Robbing Con Artists"

Wrote a review on 20th November with 5 stars for customer service, what a fool!!
My fish tank arrived smashed to pieces but no refund as I should have spotted a small hairline crack in their original poor pictures. Pictures showed all the relevant parts and nice new box and no mention of damage. Surely even these scammers know a smashed fish tank is no good to anyone. Also smashed in a hundred pieces is different to a hairline crack.....absolute con artists robbing innocent people hoping for a bargain to save a couple of pound!!

"Always a gamble, some pretty scammy tricks to watch out for"

I do enjoy buying from John Pye, I have bought maybe 20 lots in total.

It's a definite gamble though, had several boxes turn up with complete garbage inside them not as advertised, just received the packaging for an expensive item and that's it. Again as many others say, they play the 'should have come and viewed it' card, fine... But it's 2024, and they know full well that their business isn't limited to each auction house' local area.. Why would you offer a delivery service if your main angle is viewing the items before hand?

Good and bad, but definitely some scam activities going on internally at John Pye to oversell some items

"Won a lot"

Won a lot, paid the invoice and delivery fees, lot eventually arrived, and I had been sent incorrect items.
Contacted support, initially helpful and eventually located the correct item.
I was told once they receive the incorrect items back, they will dispatch my original order.
Almost two months in and I’m still waiting, only to be told it has gotten lost in transit and I will instead get a refund.
About 2 days later, the same item is on sale in the same location.
The whole time the only support was via email because the phone lines either constantly disconnected or you get passed through various people who don’t have a clue

"A Good company but who sells faulty…"

A Good company but who sells faulty goods.
I've purchased 9 lots from these highway bandits (3 lots where broken and didn't work) and seemed to be others people's faulty/broken goods that had been returned.
- Shark speed style hair drier / won't even turn on and had someone else's hair in the brush.
- Russell Hobbs Titan 2 Hoover / plastic that joins the head to the shaft was smashed and had to £18 from RH to get a new part.
- Shark hand held steam clear - obliviously been returned by a customer as it been used and does not work.
