ScanCafe did a great job digitizing old home movie film reels. They also digitized hundreds of old slides. I'm completely satisfied with the work ScanCafe did will my family's precious memories. I heartily recommend them!

"The VCR Scan Videos didn't do as well…"
The VCR Scan Videos didn't do as well as the scan I did on my computer using a $7 hookup. The pics were great as always.

"1000's of childhood slides"
My father took thousands of pictures when we were children Seriously! I have a dedicated slide/film scanner and thought I would scan them myself. I did a few hundred many years ago before giving up. My results were decent I thought, just too many and not enough time. It is very time consuming.
Fast forward and my mother and aunt are in their 80's and we're not spring chickens ourselves. Also some of the slides were not processed by reputable companies and they were getting some fungus destroying the emulsion.
I did a lot of research as many companies send your precious originals OVERSEAS to who-knows-where to have them digitized. I finally settled on ScanCafe as they have very good reviews and are located in Illinois. Their pricing was competitive especially when you looked at bulk pricing. They also offer sales so get on their mailing list while you sort through your material and get an idea of about how many originals you want digitized.
The ordering process was not that intuitive, I did not understand that an estimate on the number of pictures you want digitized was good enough and they would adjust the charges accordingly after they have processed them. Now that I understand that, it will be much easier in the future. I have a lot more to go as I have apparently been appointed as the family historian.
Their scans were so much better then mine! I will be gathering the slides I had already scanned myself and have them scan them again!
Very please with the final product and the care taken of my precious originals. I am looking forward to sharing them with my relatives after all these years. Such a load off of my plate (and mind) to know that I am no longer responsible for their existence and that a disaster will not mean they are lost forever.
I would suggest that you sort your material and packet and label like pictures together. IE 1965 Summer Vacation, 1974 Moms Graduation... This way they can scan all of the '1984 1st Birthday' pictures together in a file labeled as such. They can not sort the files for you so this way you do not have to re-sort and label the digital files when you get them back. While I had mine in chronological order I did not separate and band together the like slides. They did a good job keeping the years sorted but I had to go in and file them by occasion. No problem with just a few slides but a lot of work with the shear volume I had.
