"Torro Offroad is AWOL"

Torro Offroad has no one answering their phone, their phones cannot take anymore messages. their website is down. I paid in full for a Torro Offroad on March 12, 2021. I have not heard from them and I cannot get ahold of them. Corey Johnson is AWOL. I would caution anyone from spending any money with this company at this time.

"Ordered my Bataan Torro RTT on 18 Dec…"

Ordered my Bataan Torro RTT on 18 Dec 2020. After waiting patiently I called Torro and spoke directly to Cory Johnson, who told me my purchase would be shipped shortly after 20 Feb 2021 - it is now 5 May 2021 - Torro’s website has been down for weeks, their phone, both sales & customer service, have full voice-mailbox are/have been full and their e-mail is unresponsive. Check Torro’s street address - it's a USPS building. So has Torro abandoned their customers or just gone out of business and not told anyone. Clearly I can not recommend them.

"Torro Skylux review after several trips in different weather conditions."

Our Torro Skylux took a couple months to deliver due the global situation. After several trips in different environments and weather conditions, and since it is not cheap running over $3600, here is my evaluation.

On the positive side the tent is a fair value. It costs less than most competitors with the included accessories. It is sturdy and holds up in severe weather—we spent one night with gale force winds in the high desert mountains and when morning finally came it was all secure. It has all the features necessary and the materials are heavyweight and put together strongly.

These are the negatives.

▪ It shipped freight from China and UPS cargo had the final leg. We had a scary experience with the UPS driver who delivered it. He was psycho and dropped it in the middle of the street with the crating falling apart. I had to prop it up with boards. He ranted and raved and then refused to talk to us, which I filmed with my cell. I reported the incident to UPS with photos, but they wouldn’t believe me (?). He was dangerous. We dragged the mess up the driveway—it weighed over 450 lbs. Exhausting!

▪ The electrical wiring didn’t work for the inside and outside lighting and I emailed Torro for replacement parts. They never arrived so I spent about $100 creating a 12v wiring harness with two dimmer switches, inside and out. Both lights now work and I recommend this as an upgrade.

▪ The latches do not secure the hard top down as they are improperly installed with poor positioning. I had to reinstall new latch clasps so it would stay down when driving. The locks are flimsy and can be opened easily even when locked; I had to install a new locking latch on the side so it is secure. These are poor quality parts with bad installation. I also recommend this. (We carry a ratcheting strap just in case it pops open on the highway.)

▪ The tent construction tolerances make the top sag in the middle and loose on the sides. I have adjusted it as tight as possible, but it is not correctly measured and causes the drooping top. We lose almost 8 inches of headroom.

▪ The hard top caves in about an inch or two on the rear top when the weather is cold and moist. I had to place a styrofoam block inside to support it and make it even. The top is single weight, as opposed to some more expensive models which are double weight holding it stiffer and providing more insulation.

▪ The tent is incredibly hard to take down. It does not always fit under the shell and sometimes requires opening and closing it several times to get it right. I didn’t’ see this in their YouTube video, but it is a real pain and time consuming.

▪ The awning didn’t come with enough poles for the configuration and support. I had to buy aftermarket poles, stakes and cord. It is not like the images on the Torro website.

▪ The rainfly and window awning poles are very flimsy and bend permanently on first use. I asked Torro for some spares, but they have no parts at all. I had to buy some aftermarket ones.

▪ The t-bolts were too long to fit my rack without hitting the car top. They’re over 4”—big for most auto racks. Torro had nothing, so I used something else to secure the tent to the rack. I will eventually have to take it off and cut down the t-bolts—a major job! The tent is also very heavy, far over 200 lbs and not the 150 lbs advertised. It was extremely difficult to install and I had to use 4 crossbars because of the weight. It is a 2-3 strong man job.

If I had it to do again, I would buy the more expensive name brand tent for the quality of construction and other lacking details. Including the spare parts the dealer should have but doesn’t. But, after all is said and done, we are enjoying it now and have managed to work out all its failings so it is almost as good as the premium one. You have to decide if the savings compensate for any quality issues—and if you are a handyman capable of working on your own equipment to make it right.

"Love this tent"

We bought our Bantam last November. Have only had it out a limited number of times, with winter, but so far, love it. Solid quality. Excellent customer service. Only two areas needed improvements. The locking mechanism to close tent and the mattress. The foam mattress is fairly firm, as most rooftop tents are, so we purchased an additional self inflating pad. But otherwise, absolutely everything has been perfect. The product, for the price, was great. Especially with the additional insulation and awning and built in led lights.

"Disappointed on how long it took to…"

Disappointed on how long it took to receive my tent. I never got an update email on my tent. I reached out several times to them and they kept pushing back the date. When I finally received my tent several months later it looked like it was rushed in production. The mounting hardware was not made properly and it couldn’t mount right. The box that my tent came in looked like it was dropped. To be honest with you I only opened it once since I’m still waiting on the replacing hardware I was promised from Corey. Send out other email with pictures and still no response. It’s almost the end of the year and I haven’t used my tent. Other things I noticed were, the latch won’t lock and it looks poorly made. I had to drill small holes so my rain fly sticks could be used. Like I said, it looks like my tent was rushed and poorly made. Also, the mattress sucks! The original video showed a white foam mattress with Corey and his girlfriend testing it out. One reason I bought from them. I see they made upgrades and changed it and this is not “KING SIZE HIGH DENSITY FOAM MATTRESS”At this point I’m Wishing I would’ve gone with a known brand. Yes, we get all these stuff for free, but is it worth the hassle? Communication needs to be better!

I have pictures but won’t let me upload.

"Solid company and better product!"

The delays due to Covid-19 were not ideal, but to be expected with all of the challenges. I give this company a lot of credit for surviving through those times within their first year of business, all while maintaining a high end product. I have loved everything about the RTT so far and happy that I did not skimp on buying a cheaper product. The insulation that zips in nice and easy was a big selling point for me, due to living in Minnesota where the temps can be a bit unbearable. After adding the insulating lining, I could already tell within minutes that it was holding in the heat a lot better than I had expected. Eager to put this thing to use and will follow up with any additional details.

I did have one item that was a bit disappointing, but that was due to the shipping company. When I received the tent, I took apart all the packaging and noticed that there were a few dents and a punctured hole in the base of the tent. I understand Torro had nothing they could do to avoid a situation like this and don’t hold it against them. Great company and even better customer service. Cheers for the adventures ahead!

Product is great. Customer service could be more forthcoming on status of delays and shipping dates.
