I can not thank step change enough the last 5 years they have helped me clear or my debts and I have finally made the last payment. I nearly lost my house and would of without their help

"Life changing support."

I had managed to rack up 50k on my Credit Cards. I was managing the payments ok each month but not really reducing my credit card balances, despite paying 1k per month. Most of this money was just paying off the interest. I knew this was not sustainable as it would have taken me until I was 105 years old to have paid the balance off. I was initially worried about contacting Step Change but after speaking to them, they arranged a Debt Management Plan, negotiating with my credit card companies and getting them to freeze the interest.

Step Change worked out what I could afford to pay (which was less than I'd been paying to the credit cards before). My initial plan set for 3 years. Each year the budget was reviewed and due to a change in my home situation after the first year the plan was extended by an additional year . I have just made my final payment and now can say I am debt free after 4 years. 4 years v's 56 years is a massive difference. Saving me literally thousands of pounds that I would have paid in interest. My only regret is not contacting Step Change earlier. I had always been fairly money savvy, but debt has a way of slowly creeping up on you. I've often had debt previously but managed to pay it down when necessary. This time, the level of the debt had got so high, despite managing to pay over 1k per month across all my credit cards, the next month the balances were more or less the same. I didn't have any opportunity to make a larger payment to shrink the debt and so at the rate I was paying it was going to take me forever.

I've literally paid thousands on interest payments to the credit card companies over the couple of years prior to the DMP with very little being taken off the overall balance. Step Change helped me to break out of this negative cycle and get my life back on track again. I am very grateful for all their support and the Credit Card companies received every penny that I owed to them.

What can I say, was in bad debt (my own fault) to the tune of 29,000 things got so bad my wages just covered my credit cards payment after normal bills so nothing left in case of emergencies, robbing Peter to pay Paul so to speak. So needed to do something quickly this was 2017 did a Google search and Martin Lewis site came up did a search and step change came up. So I bite the bullet and phoned them and the advice they gave me from the start was amazing so reassuring and professional, had to send them all my credit card statements and 3 wage slips and after doing a spread sheet with all my out goings against my incoming they sorted out a payment plan, they wrote to all my debts explaining what's happened and what's going to happen in the future, took the 3 months waiting period with no payments to get money behind me, most of my debts excepted the offer and interest was stopped a couple was not so easy. The main thing step changed did was take a load of my shoulders and helped me get back on track, it's not been easy at all, frustrating at times and scary with letters almost every week, phoning up your debts up explaining and when you mention step chance they know your trying to do something about your situation. Letters do stop, phone calls as well. I am on a debt management plan (dmp) and it's been a life saver. Fast forward to Jan 2025 I've got one more payment in February and I am dept free all thanks to step change helping me, the hardest part was admitting to yourself you need help and making the first step. If your thinking about contacting them you could just get advice and see where you stand. They are numerous plans just talk to them and see what suits you best, at the end of the day it's down to yourself if you want to carry on struggling with debt or get professional help.
