"If I could give this company 0 stars, I would."

If I could give this company 0 stars, I would. Choosing to rent with FairCar during my time in Iceland, turned my vacation into a nightmare. We were not given the rental car we had originally reserved. Instead, we were given an old run-down mini-van. Our rental broke down, and FairCar refused to assist us. They referred us to a mechanic nearby, who took advantage of us by charging us an outrageous amount for a tire change. They refused to give us a new rental car, despite us not feeling safe. They put my credit card number down for the deposit without my authorization (We rented with my friend's credit card). Then, after we returned the car and had it cleared for inspection, they charged my friend and I for unspecified damages. Overall, please stay far away from this pathetic excuse for a company.

"This is the worst car rental company in …"

This is the worst car rental company in Iceland. First, they didn't give me the car I reserved online, instead giving me a much older and worn down version from a different brand. The car broke down multiple times, and we had to pay out of pocket to fix the damages. Even after saying I did not feel safe in the car, FairCar refused to swap cars. Also, the insurance I bought took a very long time to get back with me, and I still have yet to receive payment over a month later (the claim was filed right after the incident). When I returned the car, I had it inspected and cleared, and when I returned home they hit me with surprise charges (an extreme amount), even after I was handed a document that listed everything wrong from the inspection. All in all, horrible experience. Horrible car. Horrible customer service.

"LADRONES"

En primer lugar llegaron una hora tarde a buscarnos, tuvimos que llamarles varias veces para recordarles que les estábamos esperando.
Una vez que llegamos a la oficina nos preguntaron por la hora del vuelo para saber cuándo devolveríamos el coche, les dijimos que a las 6 de la tarde y que queríamos devolverlo lo más tarde que fuera posible. A esto nos respondieron que a las 12 y en eso quedó todo. A la hora de devolverlo, nos dicen que era a las 12 de la noche, no de la mañana, y que les pareció raro que no lo devolviésemos el día anterior, que pensaron en llamarnos pero que nos dieron tiempo, obviamente para poder cobrarnos la diferencia. Si hubieran tenido el detalle de llamarnos podríamos haber ido, ya que dormíamos en el camping de al lado, o si la mujer del primer día nos hubiera dejado la hora clara hubiéramos adaptado los planes, pero lo hicieron astutamente para conseguir cobrar más, los ladrones.
Estamos muy descontentos con la poca humanidad de la empresa, muy rastreros.

"$1312 charge for ding in my door"

My rental was hit by another vehicle's door and left a small ding. I had third party insurance and was told I would need to leave a credit card authorization for 100 EUR, which I did. If you didn't have insurance you had to leave a 1500 EUR deposit. I received an email showing damage of 114. Krona and a charge for $1312 USA appeared on my credit card even though I had third party insurance. My insurance is paying, however, I feel this was a drastic overcharge. I used Fair Car 12-2015 and 6-2017 and probably would have been their repeat customer for life if this had not happened. GPS is not good, outdated. Anna is friendly and fantastic.

"IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING TO ICELAND"

IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING TO ICELAND, DO NOT RENT FROM FAIR CAR! my wife left a review on trust pilot on our negative experience with this rental company and fair car had it removed as they claimed we never rented from them!. Unfortunately, we didn't read the numerous online bad reviews about fair car rental until after we had booked our rental car. From the online reviews on trip advisor.com and review centre.com, Fair car rental has treated many other renters with the same dodgy practices that I experienced (credit cards charged months after renting with for 'damage' costs). I have rented cars all over the world for the past 30 years and fair car is by far the worst and most unethical company i have ever encountered. Their rates are cheaper when you book but you get billed for thousands of dollars/euros weeks or months after the car rental is over. They take an impression of your card when you pick the car up so they can (and do) charge whatever they want after the rental period is over. I made sure i did the pick up and drop inspection during their office hours with a fair car employee present and got a copies of both inspection reports. I took photos of any damage that was already there when i picked the car up and when i dropped it off. I purchased all of the insurance that fair car offered (including sand & ash and the complete excess damage waiver which according to their rental agreement, reduced our financial responsibility to zero. i received a small rock chip on the passenger side windshield (with no cracking or spreading) during my rental. I've had similar rock chips repaired on my own car but fair car informed me that the entire windshield would need to be replaced. I filed the claim with worldwide insurance (the cedw insurance that fair car offered) and worldwide agreed to pay them directly. After this, fair car charged my own credit card for almost $1200 for a new windshield. I have reported fair car rental to the european and icelantic consumer protection agencies. do your research and read trip advisor.com and review centre.com for other negative reviews on this rental company. the other reviews are all very similar to my experience with high charges on your credit card after your vacation is over. save yourself a lot of wasted time, money and headache and rent your car with another icelantic company.

"cheap but not reliable, not FAIR"

(03/07/2017)This car rental company is very cheap in comparison with the other companies located in Keflavik. Someone picks you up in the airport at your flight arrival time and drives you back to the airport after drop off of the car. We rent a small car, very simple and basic but which ran well. We were a bit worried about the tires which seemed a little deflated but they survived to our 14 days trip.
I paid the booking of the card with my visa card Premier so I did not have to add any insurance. However, I was very surprised at the picking of the car when the girl ask me a deposit of 1000 euros by card. My card was not configured for such a deposit neither the on of my friend. We were on the middle of the night in the middle of the ocean. The girl proposes to take their insurance (100 euros) and so I had only 50 euros to depose with my card. I accepted because I had no choice if I wanted a car for my holidays.
At the term of our trip, we planned to drop off the car at maximum 10 pm so we asked for a reservation of the car until 10 pm. We were a bit early at the agency ( 8pm ). The agency was closed, the emergency phone never answered. Someone called me back (with a private number so that I could not call him back another time) to explain me that nobody will be there until 10 pm (it was not a maximal time to dropp off the car but a precise time. We were lucky that our plane was at 1 am...).
So this car rental is cheap but the service is cheap also. I would not really recommend this car rental. By reading the other comments I am quite afraid because indeed, the girl insisted to drop us at the airport immediatly after giving her the keys of the car. The car had no damages and we washed it before drop off so I hop we will not have bad surprises.

We had a bad surprise. I saw on my bank account a payment of 57.7 euros from the car rental company. I had no mail, no text, nothing from the company to explain this payment. When I send them an email, they answered me that it was because we did not fill the fuel tank before the drop off. Of course, we did it, we had the receipt from the gas station. I am waiting for their answer.

update 26/07/2017
After contacting directly the gas station concerning the receipt on which no address is indicated except the headquarters of the company, the company contact has directly confirmed by email that we had put fuel at 5 pm the day of the drop off 4 km from the drop off location. Thus, FairCar has admitted their error and refund us all the additional fees for the "missing" fuel.
I hope we will not have additional bad surprises in the future

Conclusion: do not hesitate to contest their decisions if you know that you are right!
Finally I would not recommend FairCar except for people who want low price but should be very careful (ask questions at the check in and make them write their answers, take pictures of your car before and after, take the receipt from the gas stations and do not hesitate to contact them for their support)

"i rated fair car iceland poorly on …"

i rated fair car iceland poorly on trust pilot and they challenged the fact that this was a real transaction. i have the proof in the emails sent from fair car rental to myself with this reference number. reference # is 19974 for a vw caddy campervan that was rented from april 28, 2017- may 10 2017. unfortunately, i read the many poor reviews of fair car iceland after i had booked the car. fair car rental doesn't have a review system from past customers on their own website anymore because of all of the negative reviews they were receiving. i have been renting cars internationally for the past 20 years and i knew to do the check in and check out inspections in person with a fair representative, receive copies of the inspection paperwork and take photos of the car before and after of any issues. we purchased the maximum amount of insurance that fair car offered in their office when we picked up the car ('sand & ash' as well as as their 'zero excess damage waiver' which reduced our responsibility to zero according to the rental contract). we received a small rock chip on the passenger side windscreen with no spreading. fair car insisted the whole windscreen needed to replaced. as we had purchased fair car's 'zero excess damage waiver' i was not worried, we filled out the claim paperwork with the insurance company who agreed to pay fair car directly once they submitted the invoices for the new windscreen with administration costs. this insurance company as well as myself requested fair car via email to submit this information in order for the payment to be made on a daily basis. fair car refused to send this required information and over a month after the rental was done, and they charged my credit card $1200 u.s dollars for a new windscreen. the insurance company will not reimburse me for any damages until this information is sent by fair car rental. it would take less than a minute for fair car to send this information but they simply aren't returning emails. if you are going to rent a car in iceland please read other online reviews on fair car as they have done the same to me to many many other customers. save yourself a lot of headache and wasted time on the phone and rent with another company in iceland.

"Good experience with minor hiccups"

The car was nice, the people were friendly, and the overall experience was great. I would only be aware of a few things: (1) the company is not attached to the airport and they will be expecting to pick you up from the airport and take you elsewhere at the time you put in for reservation. Be aware of this because otherwise you will get charged a reservation "no show" fee. I was not charged once I explained that I did not know about this. (2) they give a fob for discounted gas during the trip, but the one that we received did not work. The discount is hardly worth much anyway, though. (3) they had many wifi problems when we arrived to get the car, so plan for some delays as all the paperwork is processed. It is a lot to go through after all. (4) nobody told us that in Iceland it is a law to drive with the lights on. That's something a rental company should share with tourist drivers. (5) Again, the overall experience was great and I would recommend people use this company, if they are aware of these items.
