"Culture of company lacks integrity"
i bought a conservatory from Smiths for just under £17k so it was a lot of money. Right from the start contractors were used despite being told by the salesman that they didn't use them. In reality everyone was a contractor and one had only done one job before mine. There was no checking on the quality of the work they did despite this. Each one that came would tell me that the next contractor would do something, but the next contractor would come and wouldn't do it. For instance the first contractor left a lot of smashed bricks in a huge pile against my fence and a lot of rubbish on my grass. They said the next person would sort it out and they needed the sand etc. The next contractor hadn't put it there, didn't need it and just said they weren't going to do anything about it so it was left for weeks. There was terrible communication from the office in Basildon. No-one answered the phone, I would ring and ring and no one would answer. On one occasion the phone was picked up and then immediately hung up. There is no ansaphone so you can't do anything other than hold. If there are issues the phone recording tells you to send an email, that is their policy, you can't talk to anyone. It took weeks and weeks to get it built and was significantly delayed for reasons unknown and unexplained to me. My family and friends all thought it was very funny as it went on so long. The surveyor kept visiting as his computer couldn't do the drawing with the measurements they took. He kept ringing me up and saying the roof wasn't right on the computer and could he come and measure up again and in the end he said they would have to sort it out on site during the build. From my perspective it was a straight forward build so I didn't understand what the issue was. I wasn't confident in what they were doing. They left a lot of mess in the garden for weeks and ruined my grass. Once it was finished I had to spend several hours scrubbing dried concrete off of my patio doors, which you don't really expect, you expect it to be left all clean and tidy.
There was a broken window and they measured up for a new one but turned up with the wrong size and had to go away and re-order it, so it went on, just chaos really.
I agreed to use the Barclays finance and when it was partially built I was asked by the contractor to sign the form saying I was totally satisfied with the product, when I wasn't. At that stage there was no plastering inside and out, no floor, no water butt, a broken window, a trench not filled in and loads of rubbish in my garden. I declined to sign and so the contractor called a manager at Smiths and sat outside my house in their van. I spoke to the manager and said I would sign once these issues were sorted, but it was nowhere near finished. He then threatened me and said if I didn't sign straight away to say that I was satisfied with the build I wouldn't get a plasterer or anymore work done for 6 weeks. I told him he needed to reflect on what he had just said. He got angry and told me I needed to reflect and started threatening me and so I wished him a good weekend and hung up. I then spoke to the contractor still sat outside my house as clearly the manager thought that I would sign it and so the contractor was waiting for the form. I explained that I just didn't feel it was right to say it was acceptable when there was so much work outstanding. They then went away. Amazingly over the weekend they seemed to reflect and another person got in contact with me and some of the issues were resolved the following week.
I asked another manager who had clearly only been sent round to get me to sign the form why I had been threatened and was told that the company was just chasing figures and the senior management at Smiths gave targets to them and they had to meet these targets, so me refusing to sign meant they wouldn't hit their target that week and get into a lot of trouble. I pointed out that there was a connection with the product and the money being paid.
I wasn't really satisfied but signed the form despite still having a broken window because I just wanted to be rid of them and get on with the rest of it myself, although they did eventually fix the window a couple of days later.
The threats were the worst of it really and that really upset me. I also now have a 5 x 3 foot patch in my garden covered in sand with no grass as they left rubbish on it for 6 weeks. I also have to find someone to box in my pipes as the box wasn't ticked by the salesman despite that being a specific thing we wanted doing, so make sure you absolutely check everything even with the salesman looking at you. They cannot deliver what they say they will deliver and they don't have the resources to do it. The conservatory now looks Ok, apart from not having pipes boxed in and it hasn't leaked but because of all the drama I am pretty disappointed with it and instead of being keen to decorate etc, its ruined it a bit for me. Hopefully I will feel better in a few weeks and more motivated to start using it in the way I had hoped for. On the positive side, which there wasn't much of I can say that all the contractors that did come to do work, were polite and friendly, the issues came from Smiths itself. I was never sure when they were coming.
If you don't like conflict, then Smiths glass is not for you as you will have to be very strict with them as they will try to bully you to get the money even if the job is not done. I was able to say no and put my case calmly but it wasn't easy and they made me feel like I was being totally unreasonable and I wasn't. I also had to take the risk of having a wrecked back garden all through the summer with no tradesmen. I entered into an agreement with Smiths involving a lot of money and did so in good faith. I took photos of it all and would be very happy to speak to the leadership of Smiths in order to understand why the culture is to blackmail their clients. I would say steer well clear of them if you can and am happy to talk to anyone about my experience and share my photographs.

"AVOID AVOID AVOID !!!!!"
AVOID AVOID AVOID !!!!!!
Seriously, nothing but trouble since the salesman (now left the company) sold my elderly disabled father incorrect doors and conservatory doors.
Chap who took measurements (now left the company) stated I might have issues with getting the door ordered, but that was not his problem and told me the installation team will sort it out.
My father received a phone call at 0750 one morning "telling" him that he needed to pay an extra £233 as the door was more expensive than they first thought. The call woke him up and he felt threatened as he did not have the extra money and asked to cancel everything, but was TOLD he could not and had to pay the extra money when the installing team" arrived.
A day after the installation team were meant to arrive, ONE person turned up (now left the company) NOT from Smiths, WITH INCORRECT DOOR AND WINDOWS, COULD NOT EVEN LIFT THEM OUT THE VAN BY HIMSELF. Chap left after a cup of tea. as he could not do anything as the doors were all wrong and not what I had on my quote.
Why should a disabled elderly person be conned out of HIS hard earned money ? He has worked hard all his life and just wanted to update his door and windows. Seriously, if you are old or disabled, Smiths will take advantage of this.
AVOID at all costs.

Please read all the negative reviews below, and also the ones Smiths have managed to get taken off.
I was the person involved with your company, but did not want to say anything as I am too upset and frighten. I reported the phone call to the Metropolitan Police the same day. I do not know what happened.
I have NEVER received a single letter from you. As this is very important and serious, show your proof of postage. 100% certain you have not got anything, as I NEVER received anything.
Thought Smiths would treat me with respect and fairness. Obviously not.

"Avoid This Company at all costs awful service !"
We had a bad experience with this company renewing our conservatory glass roof to a Guardian warm roof which in theory should take 3-4 days maybe 5 days max it took Smiths 5 weeks ironing out various problems with no communication from the Smiths office not one phone call awful customer services building work left open to the elements incorrectly ordered materials the list goes on and on and they never returned as promised to rectify a problem ....in my view I would avoid this company at all costs all the good reviews on there website have been hand picked to read any positive reviews ! just take my advice and read all the reviews on the trust pilot website itself to get a more honest and accurate review of this company.

"From start to finish the service has been first class, helpful and professional"
From start to finish the service has been fantastic and professional. I would fully recommend this company, the salesman that came out was very knowledgeable and helpful. We placed the order and the surveyor that came out, made a few changes, but it was seamless and within 2 weeks I had the phone-call and a date for my windows and doors to be fitted. Unfortunately the date that the team were due to start the work, the glass hadn't been delivered, so instead of taking 2 days, they asked if they could do them all in 1 day, with 2 teams. They were superb and worked well as a team. We had a couple of problems and they were resolved by the Friday of the same week.

"I wouldn't even be giving them one star…"
I wouldn't even be giving them one star at the moment. We had windows fitted two weeks again with a few problems including one cracked window pane. I wouldn't have minded so much but no one is answering my phone calls or emails. All I want to know is when they will be returning to fix things but so far after ringing and emailing I have heard nothing.
We were quite happy with the windows and would have over looked the problems we have experienced if only they updated us on what they were going to do to rectify it. Hopefully this bad review will prompt some kind of response from them...

"Happy with result"
Work completed as per the contract. Happy with result. Fitters were polite and completed the work quickly and efficiently. Mess all cleared. The only issue was that we were not informed when the work was to commence; the fitters arrived and we were not ready for them (never received an explanation for this, despite an assurance that I would get one).
