"Disappointing customer care and a word of warning"
Both I and my husband have used Breakdown Assist for a number of years and been happy with the service in the past. However our recent experience has been less than good. My husband called for assistance a month ago and had a 3 and a half hour wait. He was told there was a problem contacting the recovery mechanics (something which they denied when they finally arrived)
Yesterday I spent over half an hour on the phone convincing the man on the other end of the phone that I had an active policy. He could find no record of it he said, even though I renewed it in February this year. I eventually send him the confirmation email and documents but found his attitude very irritating and unsympathetic. He kept sniffing loudly all the time, leaving me on hold without warning so I didn't know if I'd been cut off and made no effort to apologise when he finally got the policy confirmation from me. When I asked why it had happened he said it had probably not been updated on the system. Not a very satisfactory explanation 3 months after I'd paid for it! What if I'd been unable to access my emails and prove I was a valid customer and left stranded in the middle of nowhere? Very poor service!!
After all this stress I was then told that my callout had not been approved as it was outside the 6 hour window for claims. My car was leaking petrol when I set off to an appointment the previous evening. I took a cab instead and by the time I returned home late at night I decided to leave my call to Breakdown Assist until next morning. I was really upset after the issue about my policy not being recognised so to be then told they wouldn't come out and look at my car was the final straw. I have never been aware of this clause, which I accept is in the small print of the documentation, but having spoken to other agents they are all astounded and have never heard of such a clause being included.
Needless to say neither my husband or I will be renewing our policy. I wonder whether the company has been taken over as the recent service has definitely deteriorated. Anyone who does go ahead and use them should read their policy document very carefully. I certainly will in future.
