"Buying/upgrading property advice"

I have used Jon’s services twice since purchasing my property on the outskirts of York. I have found his advice invaluable and I would not hesitate in recommending him to others.

Charters Reid did the property survey when I initially bought the house and highlighted a number of potential issues which were important and allowed me to push back to the seller – as well as just being aware so I could budget for sorting them out.

More recently, I engaged with Jon to advise me on the most effective way to upgrade and extend my property. My concern was that I was potentially over-developing a size- constrained plot and my costs would far exceed the finished property value. The house lends itself to multiple different options – all of which have varying costs/benefits to consider. Jon’s knowledge of the property market around York is second to none and he was able to advise me on optimising a design that reduced costs whilst maximising end value. Jon helped me understand/quantify my house value post works which gave me the confidence to invest significant sums of money into the property.

As a business owner, I have always relied heavily on external advisors/experts for transactions far simpler than a house purchase and/or renovation which is often the single biggest investment a person will ever make. I must admit I find it a bit odd that more people don’t use a property expert during the house buying/upgrading process. I would buy a pair of jeans on gut feel – and potentially a small car - but most certainly not a house!!

I am in the process of purchasing a PRC property and this company is one of the few that are specifically licensed to carry out surveys on PRC properties.

I have found this company to be extremely efficient and helpful. The information they provide, before, during and after the survey is very comprehensive and all the members of staff are most helpful. They took care of the access arrangements for me for surveying the property I plan to purchase.

Surveyor Paul is very approachable, helpful and is clearly very knowledgeable. Paul went to considerable lengths to explain everything to me about the survey and implications for the purchase, including those specific to a PRC property.

The survey document is very comprehensive and easily understandable. As a result, I am very confident of making a well informed decision about going ahead with my purchase. The survey information has clearly informed me about each aspect of work that will need to be carried out and within recommended timeframes.

I rang up and organised a survey to be done within days of the original consultation, it was quick and simple.

The non-destructive building survey was carried out to a high standard, with defects and future issues brought to my attention with communication with Paul (the surveyor) in a face to face meeting at the property, as well as continual communication via email and phone in the after stages of the survey. His advice and knowledge was paramont in my decision to continue to purchase a 1800's property with known defects. I would recommend Charters-Reid to family and friends.
