Had a very positive experience using these surveyors. The service was very personal and positive. The type of the survey they did for us (home movers report) was comprehensive, with a lot of useful information, advise and tips. The person who did the survey was very happy to answer all our questions directly. I would recommend using Charter-Reid for your house survey.

Within a month of purchasing my new property, the kitchen ceiling collapsed due to water damage caused over many years in the bathroom above. The problem was not picked up by the survey. The cost of the full survey did not represent value for money given the cost (many thousands of pounds) having to put the matter right - not to mention the loss of income.

"Root-cause diagnosis and good after-survey service"
I had Jon out to advise on a persistent damp problem. He gave me a clear and plausible diagnosis of the problem which has been borne out by further investigation, and suggested a programme of work to resolve it. Damp being damp, it will be six months or more before I can say if it has worked, but compared to that suggested by "damp specialists" (in this case Britannia Preservation) it directly addresses the causes (rather than just treating the symptoms) and has cost me half as much.
I've called Jon several time with follow-on questions, and he's been responsive and helpful every time. Indeed, he's often added details I didn't think to ask for.
When the builder I used wasn't keen to do something that Jon said was important, Jon was happy to speak to him, after which the builder was happy to do it.

"Survey report"
I cannot fault the response to my initial enquiry or to the short time in which the matter was dealt with. The surveyor was very professional and knowledgeable, informing me at the time of her findings.
Where I find real fault is with the report that was sent out, detailing the survey.
Section 1.4, the whole of Section 2 and pages 7 to 14 in Section 5 were not applicable to the requested survey. Even if it's stated in the report that Section 5 is standard in all the reports, it was unhelpful and not needed. All I required was a specific report on the fault and any course of action to be taken, illustrated by photographs where necessary.
It would appear that little thought has gone into writing a few lines that actually deal with the matter, on a report template. It's as if to justify the costs, a report is sent, padded out with superfluous fluff. It wasn't even a printed document but a PDF sent as an e mail attachment. 10 out of 10 for the survey and surveyor, 1 out of 10 for the report.
