"Damaged Antique furniture"

I recently purchased an antique piece of furniture, value £2,600, that required packaging and shipping from the Cotswolds UK to France. I received a quotation, in the sum of £1,400, from Pack-and-Send (Oxford) and was assured that it included for a tailor-made wooden packing crate/ pallet, specialist insurance cover and and priority delivery by FedEX.

Two weeks after paying Pack-and-Send, I received delivery. The antique had been placed on a standard-size recycled pallet, which was far too small, and shrink-wrapped in polythene over loose pieces of cardboard and polystyrene foam, secured with tension straps applied directly to the antique.

On unpacking, I discovered that the antique piece of furniture was badly damaged. Initially, Pack-and-Send denied all liability. Only after three weeks of correspondence and threatening legal proceedings, during which period I established that the antique had been send by economy delivery (cost £106) and that the saving on the omission of the tailor-made wooden packing crate pallet was £480, did Pack-and-Send agree to reimburse me with half the shipping cost. The packaging complied with neither FedEx’s guidelines nor that of the specialist insurance cover, so I was unable to make any insurance claim.

I will never use Pack-and-Send again.

My cousin in South Croydon arranged with Pack and Send to have original oil paintings of my great great grandmother Mary Fuller (1791-1879) and great great grandfather Thomas Fuller 1 (1791 -1877) who was Mayor of Bath 1861-1862 shipped to New Zealand.
