"Hi Posse!"

Hi Posse!

Yes, I’ve gone all the way through and now are reviewing the places that were sketchy – like the apostrophes in numbers and the em, en punctuation.

The explanations and worksheets/answers have been extremely helpful! I’ve been gratified that I do remember many of those things, and also grateful to have my slips pointed out.

So, yes, there is something that could be helpful – Instead of having to go back through it all to find the places I need to re-focus on, it would be great if my mistakes along the way were somehow compiled together somewhere, kind of the way that DuoLingo has me review the questions in each section that I missed the first time through.

Other than that, I’m very happy with the information, the encouragement that you offer, the flexible timing, and the progress that I’m feeling. Thank you for all of that.

With gratitude, Jean

"The course has been helpful overall"

The course has been helpful overall. However, the narrator's rapid pace sometimes hinders comprehension, making it difficult to fully grasp the concepts. For instance, the explanation of en and em dashes was brief, and I would have appreciated more examples to solidify my understanding. Additional examples would be beneficial for reinforcing the concepts presented in the course.

"Helpful but quick"

Overall, the course has been helpful. However, the narrator reads so quickly at times that I am not fully understanding the concepts. I never heard of the en and em dashes before now. I would prefer more examples, too.

"General Proofreaders is Awesome! 😊"

I received plenty of encouragement from the group, and even though I got frustrated at times, I’ll always be grateful I never gave up.

"What a delight!"

This service was such a delight! I was honestly surprised with them giving such an in-depth lecturing about familiar grammar lessons and things completely new! I legit never knew about the existence of em/en dashes and even style writing until this. I've always had a dream of being an author when I grow up, and I think this steps me closer to that dream.

"I enjoyed my journey through the…"

I enjoyed my journey through the Transcript Proofreading course. I felt that is was very thorough and provided enough information and training to confidently go out and start a proofreading business. There is only one thing that I would change. The annotated transcripts are very outdated and have been proofed by several people. There are a lot of missed errors. Although we are taught to go by the rules of grammar and punctuation, having updated transcripts would lessen the frustration of many new students. Overall, I've learned a lot and I feel that the information and material provided was totally worth the investment.

"POOR QUALITY (from a former legal transcriptionist)"

I would suggest researching all proofreading courses out there. I once had my court reporter license in State of WA. I attended Bryan College, where Margie Wakeman from Margie Holds Court was our English instructor. I paid $397 for the PA course when they were having a holiday sale. I think it was the day after Christmas… regular price, if I recall correctly, was $1097. What a rip off. I didn’t work as a reporter but was a legal transcriptionist for 10 years. The course includes practice transcripts to edit. The answer key practice transcripts to compare our work were so fraught with errors that many students were openly complaining about it on the private PA Facebook group.

There’s a midterm and a final. They give you a transcript to edit. You have to get 100% to pass. If you don’t pass the first time, they will tell you what your error is and what page it’s on and give you a second chance to pass it. If you don’t pass a second time, you start over with a whole new transcript, and they charge you $50 per grading thereafter. I know my stuff. I didn’t pass the first time. They sent it back with, I think, four errors? One of the errors they said I had was a missing comma on page 4. There was nowhere else on that page that I would put a comma.

Two other students and I took our conversation off their Facebook group and were messaging each other for privacy. We actually shared our graded midterms with each other and discovered there were serious inconsistencies in their grading. One of the women with whom I shared my graded midterm told me that she passed, thanks to having it. By the way, this lady was an English teacher for 20 years. The other women had also shared their graded midterms with me. By that point, I had lost interest in the program and never submitted a second midterm. Those poor quality answer key transcripts really turned me off. That just killed it for me.

A woman I met on a proofing and scoping group told me she had done research on the PA course and decided not to purchase it because she discovered the former owner “had some major issues and sold the business.” She took Proofreading Business Coach and is very happy with that. I start scopist training with BeST this fall.

"Great class for starting a proofreading business"

I really like that the class teaches both how to proofread and how to turn it into your own business. It was great to be able to take the entire class at my own pace. The practice essays helped me to improve my skills and feel more comfortable with proofreading. There's only one thing I would change- I wish the annotated essays were more like answer keys so that I could be more sure of the quality of my work.

"A Good, Thorough Course"

I learned that there's more to professional proofreading than just red Xs on mistakes! I'm happy with the knowledge I gained.
If setting up your own business is your goal, there are several modules addressing the ins and outs of establishing a home-based business.

"Please be aware that general proofreading is not the same as proofing transcripts"

I got the General Proofreading course, and it wasn't what I expected. I have buyer's remorse and realize later that the course I actually wanted was proofreading transcripts specifically. I didn't know until I get an email later that they were having a sale on that course, but I didn't want to spend another few hundred dollars on it.
