I have had one book published through Atmosphere, and another in the works. It’s not a scam. Yes, they charge, but the work they do is brilliant. They are selective, and each book is assessed before acceptance. I am very impressed with the editing, proof reading and art work they provide. Everyone is very bright and engaged. Everyone is kind. The publicity staff are helpful - and I always knew a lot would be down to me. As far as the add on packages are concerned you can take them or leave them. I chose to do my own audio book and website. My book is now live and people like it - it looks beautiful. Money well spent.

I wrote for many years but felt really stumped when thinking about publishing; just beyond my capacity to engage in “how to publish.” And I had never written earnestly in prose, as poetry had been my singular passion. I’d sent a few poems to sites in Poetry Magazine where I saw an add for Atmosphere Press. I did have my memoir written and thought I’d send it to them.
I was actually surprised by their assistance from the beginning to end. Actually they gave me perhaps more freedom than I imagined—to really make the text mine. It still needs some work and more narrative development in the second half. But that’s a reason for another book.
I’m not proud of my story, but wanted to get it out of my mind before moving on. So I won’t make much effort in advertising this particular book. Anyway, the story is there and I think it’s interesting!

Yes, you pay for these services, instead of a traditional publisher taking a percentage from your sales. I knew that from the outset. As part of the Atmosphere family, I retain 99% of the rights to my book. I get choices with Atmosphere, instead of a traditional publisher buying my book, then possibly shelving the manuscript for years or even changing the content since traditional publishers own the rights once you sell. I am also impressed that Writers Digest supports Atmosphere Press, that I have received good reviews and nationally-recognized awards for my books. Thanks to their promotion package, yes another cost, I experienced 5-star feedback from nationally-known reviewers which promoted my books more successfully. Atmosphere has been incredibly transparent about costs and is a welcome alternative between scammer publishers and traditional options. They support my creativity, welcome my feedback, work with me to create the book that my manuscript needs to be.
