This was a very enjoyable review of my driving skills. The examiner put me completely at ease, and we drove around for an hour on a variety of road types, including fast dual cariageways, complex traffic islands, country roads, housing estates and town centre. I was pleased that my driving was judged to be excellent, as although I passed my driving test 51 years ago I have never in that time had an impartial assessment of my driving skills. I now have increased confidence that I'm doing it right.

The whole experience from my very first observed ride to the day of my test, was interesting, fun, and challenging. Mike, Adam and Martin are all dedicated individuals with a passion for safety and helping people to improve their skill set.

During mid to late 2024 I enrolled with the IAM for car driving initially and then motorcycles later. The tutoring, advice and general friendly attitudes have been excellent. I was able to pass both courses due in no small part to the great efforts and generous time given by each observer and support network. I would heartily recommend anyone to join the organisation and put your road skills to the test. Its surprising how much difference it makes when many aspects of driving, observation and knowledge are discussed and refined. Very worth while.

"Iam RoadSmart Motorcycle course"

I signed up for an advanced riders course with IamRoadsmart last year and undertook the course as part of their June intake. The course was run by their Manchester group (Manchester 500).
The course is split into 5 separate riders covering all types of road and driving conditions, each one monitored by a different observer. The rides themselves were all enjoyable in their own but the feedback and advice given throughout, were targeted and highly useful.
I would recommend the course to anybody no matter what their experience is. For myself, bought my first motorcycle at the age of 18. I am now 68 but returned to motorcycling last year after an absence of 8 years and was amazed how much my riding improved over the course.
After the 5th ride out I was given a pre-test ride with my master mentor and then put in for my test in September. I was delighted to pass the test with a First.

The whole team of observers were so welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable and keen to help you pass your course along with all the other friendly people on the course.
If you are thinking of doing the course don't put it off because you'll have a great time, meet new people and learn so many news skills.

From start to finish the process was entirely enjoyable and rewarding. The professionalism and friendliness from everyone involved was evident throughout, starting with my welcome from the membership sec, and then my main observer, whose advice, guidance, and general good nature was instrumental to my test result being what it was. His observer colleague too, was both supportive and instructive. The examiner made the test itself a rewarding experience. His professional approach, demeanor and clear instructions putting me at ease. This enabled me to give of my best during the test drive. The post test feedback was comprehensive and not rushed allowing me to fully take it in after the concentration levels needed on the test itself. In short, a course and experience that I would be happy to recommend, and it has spurred me on to continue to improve my driving using the IPSGA methodology.

"My 3 yearly retest"

This was my 3 yearly retest. I have been a Fellow of the IAM for some years and have the 3 yrly retest. I view it as an experience to maintain my standards and continue to learn. I was very pleased with the way it was handled by Mr Desmond. I learnt a lot from his observations as a highly experienced retired police driver.

On approaching my 70th year birthday I took the Mature Drivers Assessment and after advice from the assessor decided to undertake the IAM RoadSmart Advanced drivers course.

My observer who prepared me for the advanced driver assessment was excellent. We undertook nine drives and he was able to identify my weaknesses and gave me the skills to improve my driving. I also had a pre- assessment drive with another observer and I felt happy to attempt the 'test'.

Despite being nervous, my last driving test being 53 years ago, the examiner was very friendly and put me at ease. We decided to have a conversation as we drove as this is the natural way in we drive when accompanied. It was not a perfect drive but I passed and in the debrief he gave me further advice on how to improve still further.

I would encourage all senior drivers to take the Mature Driver Assessment. The advanced driver course is excellent. It has made me more observant, to position my car correctly in the road and I now make more progress when I drive. Yes faster but safer.
