"Very Disappointed in Guide One"
In June of 2023 we had a major hail storm in our town that damaged the roof of our church building. This was documented by the National Weather Service. We reported it promptly and took steps to prevent further damages. Guide One sent insurance adjuster #1. He said that there was definitely hail damage and a roof replacement was in order. When we received his estimate his it was very low and far below the amount needed to replace the roof on our church a commercial building. I spoke with the adjuster on several occasions ...he never explained except to say he has been doing insurance adjusting for 20 years. So our insurance agent arranged a joint phone call between the adjuster, myself, the agent and the roofer. In the call it became apparent the adjuster was applying residential code and not commercial code, The adjuster became angry and disrespectful and hung up on us. After that experience the agent requested that Guide One send another adjuster. Guide One stepped it up another notch. They sent Frank Lovelace and he brought in an engineer and a "roof and HVAC" inspectors. Frank indicated to me that he was a step up from the first adjuster. No explanation was offered as to why the "step up" was needed. Guide One then responded that the damage was lower than our deductible and the roof didn't need to be changed. Our only option was to hire an attorney or the appraisal process. We chose the appraisal process because we didn't have the money for an attorney. The appraisal process began. Guide One chose their appraiser and we chose ours. The Guide One attorney sent us a letter objecting to our choice of appraiser and threatened that should we win they may object due to choice of appraiser. We stayed with our choice. The appraisers didn't agree so an umpire was brought in. The umpire agreed on the roof damage, but only would approve a roof coating not a new roof. Our policy is a " like and kind policy". This decision didn't meet the like and kind provision of our roof, so since we had no choice we took the roof coating and we didn't have the money needed to hire an attorney. So we did win the appraisal process, but didn't receive what what we paid for ..."alike and kind' replacement. In June of 2024 in the middle of the appraisal process we were notified of non-renewal by Guide one. We requested an extension until the appraisal process was over, because no other insurance would insure us until the appraisal process and repairs were completed. This all began in June of 2023 and not completed until fall of 2024. It appears it was all an obvious attempt to not pay what was due us by policy coverage. Sadly, we had to accept a settlement less than we were owed. In considering the timing of the notice of non-renewal, it appears that the non-renewal was punitive for challenging Guide One actions in the appraisal process.
