U-Pack Moving

"I’m sad to see all the one star reviews…"
I’m sad to see all the one star reviews I’ve had such great positive service with friendly people that show up on time and give you a great detailed schedule and tracking number. Rates are reasonable and all is explained well. I’m having two pods moved from Illinois to Southern California and these will be here before other movers I’ve used and still waiting on 6 weeks later! Above all I’d use unpack anytime, it’s refreshing to find great customer service.

"We saved approximately 6k doing it ourselves!"
We did a move from SoCal to southern Idaho with U-Pack. Overall, we were happy with with the service. The reason 4 stars instead 5 is for the following:
1. The Ramp! It is heavy, awkward and can be dangerous as all get out (need at least two strong adults). The ramp on the 2nd load was damaged and needed to be taken out of service.
2. Cleanliness of 2nd truck was not good. Previous use must have been to haul construction debris away. There was sand, small gravel, and yard waste that needed to be swept out. This was probably what damaged the ramp.
3. Wood dividers to separate partial loads need to be inspected and replaced often due to people who don't adequately secure their load. Shifting of load cause locking bars to be bent.
4. The holes on locking bars for one to lock load need to be enlarged to accept industry standard hasp lock width. We had to use mallot to install and remove lock.
I think alot of the bad reviews are due to inadequate packing and securing of the load. Also, you can't go cheap on packing materials. Sturdy boxes,(not plastic storage containers), bubble wrap, wrapping paper, foam blocks, and shipping blankets. We spent approximately $1500 on supplies.
Loading is like playing Tetris! You need to take your time to properly load. It took about 14 hrs for us to load one and a half trailers.
To help secure our loads, we made a rope rigging system using the trucks slotted holes for the wood dividers. We ran this down both sides of the truck. This meant we had tie down spots everywhere. We stacked to the top of the truck, used mattresses and box springs to secure courses of stacked boxes. We probably overdid it with rope securing our load, but the end result is we had no major catastrophe.
People must remember when moving somethings are going to break or get scratched no matter how well you back. For us, I should be able to fix most items.
Over all we saved about 6K doing it ourselves. Almost forgot, for a trailer and a half from Socal to Southern Idaho was approximately $4600. This also was the quoted price.

"Terrible delivery"
My brother moved from Pasadena to Dallas and his container arrived as if it had travelled through a war zone. Everything inside was destroyed. They were told to file a claim for all the damage.

"I am never using this company again!!"
I am never using this company again!!! They charged my credit card for 8 feet when I only used a little over 5 feet. The estimated cost is what they charged me! There was no change despite the fact that I didn't need as much space as I estimated. Plus I was never given a final bill. I only knew what they charged me because of the charge on my bank account. Also, just beware that there is no suspension in the trucks, so your belongings may bounce and fall forward like mine did. It was a big mess when the large piece of wood that they used to secure everything in was removed.
Also, make sure that you and the driver measure how much space you use. I was given an estimate for 8 feet, but I didn't use all of it. But I was still charged for 8 feet. I was told "I’m so sorry and I sure wish I had known about this before it was delivered and unloaded? That is when we would typically have the driver remeasure so we could verify the footage used and make any necessary corrections. Unfortunately, there is no way to verify this after it has been unloaded and our transportation provider is stating 8’ was used. Due to the discrepancy, I would be happy to split the difference with you. The charge for the 3 additional fee is $222 ($74 per foot), so I will issue a refund to your card in the amount of $111. We certainly apologize and wish you all the best.".
Just beware and be careful!!!

"It seemed like it would be very easy, it was awful"
It seemed like it would be very easy, I scheduled my pod and the girl at Upack transferred me to their company moving partner, Moving Staffers. Unfortunately, the movers were scheduled incorrectly by the moving company, they came on completely the wrong day, after I gave them the correct date. This would be a recurring theme throughout this moving experience.
Once the day came for my Relocube to be dropped off, it was schedule for a window of 12 pm - 4 pm. It did not leave the previous customers house until after 6 pm, when it was then in a car accident. 2 hours later, the driver called me to tell me he was coming, and the new movers I had gotten to come last minute told me they could not wait any longer into the night, so I had to pay and reschedule everything for the next day (so moving out of my apartment on the next tenants lease).
Once the pod finally arrived the next day (also several hours late) the driver was nice and dropped the unit. He told me I needed 2 padlocks, instead of 1 like the moving instructions sent by UPack dictate. Otherwise, this process went fine.
Getting the pod dropped off was much worse than getting it. I was told by UPack that I would be able to provide the destination address at a later date (as when I moved, I had not found a new apartment yet). Unbeknownst to me, when I did provide the new destination address when I signed my lease, it triggers a mandatory waiting period as the Relocube was moved to a new facility to be loaded onto the truck. The girl who took my information entered the incorrect zip code, which sent my cube to the wrong destination center.
This led to me being passed to 8 different people between Upack and the various destination centers. Every single person, while being nice and I know it is not their individual faults, would tell me there was simply nothing they could really do for me as the pod was always in transit, going somewhere else, and it could not be dropped off until the day after it arrives at whatever destination center it is going to (again, the incorrect one.) I probably spent about 6 hours on the phone total over the week attempting just to find out where the pod was, I was convinced on the weekend that it had been lost or destroyed. Seeing as you cannot get in contact with this company on weekends, my family and I saw my furniture as a lost cause.
UPack employees would tell me there was an expedited package I could upgrade to to get it faster, but that never seems to actually have been initiated. When I called the Upack number directly, the initial support people I spoke to were always rather aggressive in telling me there was simply nothing I could do but wait. When I would get to their managers, they were nice in telling me there was no option (as the pod had been sent to wrong place).
Every day the UPack people would tell me they would try to schedule it for drop off the next day, and every day I would take off another day of work and scramble to try and get a new group of movers. I eventually got my pod 1 week after initially calling to have it dropped off.
While my items were not damaged in the move, the amount of money that I lost taking off work and the monumental amount of stress this caused my family shows me that this company is not worth the effort, I will likely go with a more established moving company in the future. I do not think over 2500 dollars, lost wges from work, and hours on the phone was worth this experience in the slightest.

"ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!"
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!! If you care about your belongings PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY!! We just moved from Nevada to Montana and the freight FINALLY showed up a week after they said it would and when we opened it up this morning after it arrived ALL of our furniture and boxes were trashed! Everything had fallen and moved all around. We personally wrapped everything and can’t understand why all our belongings look as if it’s been gone through. Boxes completely open with half of my wardrobe on the floor of the freight. Which now have black grease stains on the majority of my clothing. My brand new $2,000 formal dining table is completely ruined! Been crying since we opened this freight back up this morning. BEYOND DISAPPOINTED!!!

"We had a great experience initially but…"
We had a great experience initially but when our relocube arrived at our new apartment the door handle was broken so it forced us to unpack everything that night... We couldn't secure it and put a lock on it! AND it was delivered past their MASSIVE time frame window of 9am-5pm. We had to unload everything in the dark, without any help. If I had known the handle was broken I would have planned for us to have help from movers. When I told customer service all this they just blamed me and issued a TINY refund that I'm still waiting 2 weeks for. What a disaster.

"BEYOND RIP OFF PRICING!"
We have used this company about 15 times for past moves with fair pricing. Received current pricing of over $1,100 more than we have ever been charged. Their pricing for a single trailer is $3.85 a mile, which would mean that pull two trailers would gross then over $6,000. They say this is due to COVID but hauling during covid has not decreased. They are hiding behind covid to rip customers off. I guess I expect a company that I have done business with to actually be honest and truthful. At their current prices, it is almost cheaper to hire an actual moving company. Transportation rates for household goods do not cost $3.85 a mile to haul a trailer when you are only one trailer of the load being pulled by the carrier.

"I've never personally used them- but my…"
I've never personally used them- but my new nextdoor neighbors did. The massive UPack truck has been parked right in front of my house for 4 days now. Plus, no one lives on the other side of my neighbor's house and it's all just open land, so the UPack driver could have left the truck on the other side. I am so sick of looking at it!! Please make it go away!!!

"WORST MOVING EXPERIENCE EVER"
Absolutely the worst moving experience ever! First of all we ordered a relocube. UPack’s website made it sound super easy.. delivered to your driveway, sits on ground so no climbing with heavy furniture... etc. I wasn’t told until my scheduled moving day that they don’t service my destination area with relocube, so I was getting a 27-foot tractor trailer and would be charged by the foot. The trailer is nearly five feet off the ground. It was filthy inside so all my nice things got trashed. I was told after they dropped off the trailer that I would have to assemble a huge bulkhead devised of two sheets of heavy plywood with steel pipes at the top and bottom that had to be ratcheted into place between the inside walls of the trailer. After the driver left we discovered that the huge ramp needed to get our things into the trailer was battered, bent, rusted, and damaged. It took us nearly an hour to secure it to the back of the trailer, and still it seemed unsafe. To make matters worse, the ratchet mechanisms in the bulkhead were also rusty, twisted, and jammed up so that we couldn’t even secure the bulkhead. When we called to notify UPack “customer service” of the damaged equipment they basically said there was nothing they could do. I could go on and on about the broken down junk equipment and horrible customer service we received from UPack, but bottom line is ... STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY, or you will be very sorry you didn’t.
