"Avoid at all cost"

I have found Mazuma’s conduct deeply problematic on a consistent basis. I have been a client for almost two years and keep discovering errors in the accounts prepared, even when I have meticulously provided sheets outlining all transactions.

They do not adhere to HMRC deadlines, and at least on one occasion stopped communicating in relation to an erroneously prepared VAT return, which forced me to prepare and submit the document myself to avoid HMRC penalties. They never apologized for this shortcoming and ignored requests that they not charge me for services not provided.

My most recent VAT return again contained major errors, including purchases amounting to some 10x above reality. When I raised a complaint about this, they dragged out a review by "senior accountants" until the last minute, and then resent me the same exact erroneous documents. I could not believe my eyes. The VAT return is due Monday and I have not received a properly prepared document from them. It's the same story every quarter it seems.

I am disturbed to see other clients finding major accountability gaps in the organization, and that Mazuma as an entity is apparently not registered with the AAT. This seems to mean that you can only take action against individual accountants, who seem overworked.

This is the last review I am going to leave for Mazuma, as my intention is to fire them and explore lodging complaints against their individual accountants with the Financial Ombudsman. I don't expect to gain anything from the complaints, but if I can do anything to help other business owners avoid a company which will give you unnecessary stress and damage your standing with HMRC, I would be content.

Unlike other accounting apps I've tried that froze or crashed when handling larger data sets, the MazApp remains responsive no matter how many transactions I'm processing. The cloud-based system works equally well whether I'm using my old laptop or brand new phone without performance differences. Updates install quickly without disrupting my workflow or requiring lengthy downtime. This consistent reliability means I'm never stuck unable to access financial information when I need it for important decisions.

The subscription model means I can budget for accounting costs without surprises. Their service scales with my business as it grows without complicated pricing changes. My accountant provides advice that's actually relevant to my specific industry.

Gathering documents for my accountant used to involve endless email chains and reminders about missing items. The client portal lets me upload documents directly without confusion. The automatic notification system lets everyone know what's been received and what's still outstanding without me having to keep track manually.

I was concerned that Making Tax Digital would mean learning complicated new software on top of running my business. Mazuma handled all the technical requirements while keeping my part of the process simple and straightforward.

Never check in with me, when asked for advice was told I can look it up online.
Pay £120 a month for no support at all. Late filing my accounts and told it is my responsibility to pay the penalty.

I found Mazuma’s service deeply frustrating and, at times, alarming. Over three years, I repeatedly discovered errors in my bookkeeping, including invoices being duplicated, missing records, and transactions placed in arbitrary categories. Their automated system mistakenly classified balance column figures as income, leading to discrepancies of thousands of pounds. I had to meticulously check every line myself, spending days correcting errors and maintaining my own records just to ensure accuracy.

Beyond bookkeeping issues, their handling of tax returns caused significant stress. One year, HMRC refunded an overpayment of over £2,000; the next, an error—had I not caught it—could have led to underpayment and penalties. In my second year, I received no response regarding tax return errors until January 31st. When they finally engaged, they miscalculated my tax liability by another £2,000.

I expect reliability, transparency, and clear communication from an accountancy firm, yet Mazuma has made it extremely difficult to raise concerns. When I explored escalating the issue to the financial ombudsman, I discovered a serious accountability gap: Mazuma itself isn’t registered with the AAT, only individual accountants are—making it much harder to take action against the company as a whole.

This is not about individual staff members, who may be doing their best within a broken system. The problem is Mazuma’s flawed software, lack of communication, and a business structure that seems to obstructs accountability.

I strongly urge you not to trust this firm with your finances. In my experience, their service is not only unreliable but could also put you at risk of serious financial consequences. If you choose to work with them, be prepared to double-check everything—or better yet, find a firm that operates with integrity and accuracy.
