"Charged An Additional £700 Without Our Knowledge"

Our experience followed that of other reviewers. The San Jose airport office charged us an extra £700+ without our knowledge. We were also gently pressurised into writing positive reviews whilst in the office in exchange for a free additional driver. Amex are currently investigating. Please Avoid.

A quick update. Amex have refunded the unsanctioned payment. The rental company could not provide evidence to support the additional fees.

"Failed to Deliver on their Commitment"

I prepaid for my reservation weeks in advance. When I arrived at IAH I called to confirm what shuttle I was supposed to catch since Economy isn't located in the Rental Center with every other rental company. They answered the phone "Hello".. no business name, just hello. When I asked to confirm if it was Economy Car Rental they confirmed it was but also confirmed they did NOT in fact have the car I reserved or any other car for that matter. This company was very unprofessional and could not deliver based on agreed terms. I highly recommend you pay the extra money and go with a reliable, reputable rental company. I'll not make this mistake again.

"Do not use unless you are willing to be ripped off at the counter "

Rented twice before with no problem from economy at yyz. Now they charge extra $12/ day if you use your credit card insurance. Might as well rent from the major rental companies because the total price will be almost the same and the majors are located in the terminal.

Shuttle wait time is unreliable. After waiting 40 minutes I took a cab to economy.

Vehicles are not in the greatest condition. Not a problem when it was a deal but with all the extra charges now added it's no longer acceptable to have a car that is in poor condition.

If you book through Expedia or any other online app be sure to read the "terms and conditions". Somewhere in the fine print will be a list of all the extras that you will be charged for.

Fool me once shame on you. I won't be fooled twice

Majority of 5 star ratings are fake. Most mention how great the service was by "name" of a worker. I can see someone mention good service from an employee but when an employee is mentioned in every five star review I'm going to call bs on the rating.

"The worst car renting experience!!"

The worst car renting experience!!! The woman who 'helped' me was ALEXANDRA; (this is the Miami location).
I paid in full with expedia and even added full coverage insurance through them so i would have no surprises. But when i got to the register, they lied to me and said that expedia charge was a different charge and lied again saying that they couldn't use my personal car insurance and charged me an extra $330 for 10 days (i found out later they lied), so i called them on the same day and they told me they couldn't change anything. I said ok. When i returned the car tho, more disappointment, i filled up the tank about an hour before returning it and they charged me for filling the tank! Around $100 dollars! When i argued that it was full, they asked me if i had a picture of the tank meter!!! What?
Next,they charged me for tolls, i said i never went under any tollsand if they could show me proof, but they couldn't show me any. (another $150). NEVER AGAIN!

Update:
My bank took the money back they stole.
I won! 😁

We rented a car from Economy for 10 days in Costa Rica out of the San Jose Hub for 10days.

After 4 days of travel, disaster struck as we had our passports all identifications, cell phone and credit/banking cards stolen from us. Along with this, they keys to the rental were also stolen.

We advised Economy rental car of this immediately, and after approx. 4 hours, of us having to constantly follow up with them for updates, they indicated that they would be sending a service rep down with spare keys, however, they wouldn't arrive for another 4 hours and that we would have to pay an additional 500 USD to replace the key as well as $300 USD for the service fee. They also stated that if we did not have a way to pay for this by the time they had got to the car, they would not give us replacement keys nor would they give us a new car to use. We indicated to them numerous times that they had authorization to charge the fee to our credit card on file, however, they refused this payment and responded by stating that they would only accept cash. This is absurd, especially as they were fully aware that we had no way to access any kind of cash. The result of this lead to us being stranded in a town that we did not know until about 11pm until our Air Bnb host was able to help us out with a ride as all the cab companies were closed for holidays.

Once we got back to our Air Bnb, Economy Rental car called us back and indicated that because the car was a 2024 Hyundai Tucson, the key was going to have an additional charge to replace so that the new price was going to be $800 USD for the key replacement, and then an additional $300 USD for the service fee. This was obviously completely ridiculous as anyone with half a brain would understand that a basic key fob without any kind of remote start or other technologies would not cost anywhere close to $800 USD to replace.

After arguing with them on the phone for hours, we finally had them agree to having their service driver pick us up and drive us back to our car so that we could get the rest of our belongings as we were locked out of it. The car that we were picked up in was a 4x4 Toyota Rav4. The service rep indicated that Toyota was going to be our new car and would be held for us at the local economy hub until we were able to come to an agreement with customer service regarding payment. The next day, after multiple attempts of offering legal payment tender to Economy via credit card on file, online money transfers or by using family credit cards back home, they refused them all and insisted that we paid cash as it is "phsyical presence* At this point i don't think i need to explain to anyone that this is simply EXTORTION. Credit card payment or online transfers leave a paper trail that can easily be tracked/traced. Cash does not. The company simply tried to take advantage of us based on our situation.

We've asked them to refund the money for the additional 6 days that we pre paid for on the contract. As I type this, we are currently still stranded in this Town and Economy will not answer us. At this point we will be reporting the company to Visa Securities as FRAUDULENT. Hopefully by doing that we may be able to recoup some of our costs.

For anyone traveling this country, please look elsewhere if in need of a rental car. This company has zero interest in it's clients, their situation and their safety. Being in the business industry myself, I fully understand that money is important to maintain operations, however, customer safety should always be put at the forefront. Especially a client that has indicated that they would pay for the expenses via use of Credit Card.

"Overcharged."

I travelled all over the world and use my credit card to pay for insurance coverage. It's a standard practice now a days. However, when I get to rental agency desk in certain country and for some reason they do not believe it - that's just scam. Come on - I can't be the only one with that issue, and saying you do not accept the credit card coverage is just trying to add hidden fees to your customers! If you do not want to accept the insurance provided by credit card - state it upfront so that people will not even go to you. However, you lure customers by low rates, just to smash them with collision protection that costs more than rental. That can't be right!

"DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY"

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I had booked a car with EC Car Rental months in advance and on the morning when we were due to get the car they cancelled our booking and said they had no availability. Shameful. We are a family of 4 who have been looking forward to this trip and we have been entirely let down by this company.

"A Tale of Unexpected Charges and Service Lapses"

I had a disappointing experience with Economy Car's service. On December 16, 2023, I reserved a car for $690.13 through their website. An email prompted me to check in online on January 26, which I did to expedite my service upon arrival. However, when I reached the San Jose, Costa Rica branch on January 27, 2024, I was met with a shocking surprise. An employee informed me that my booking was cancelled, and I had to book another car on the spot. Left with no choice late at night, I ended up paying $857.14 for the new rental without scrutinizing the details. To add insult to injury, upon returning the car, I was handed a receipt showing an invoice amount of $824.88—$32.66 less than what I was charged initially. This whole ordeal not only cost me extra but also highlighted a significant lapse in service and transparency from Economy Car.

"I do not recommend this rental company"

I do not recommend this rental company. They filed a damage claim against me. There was absolutely no damage to the car when I dropped it off. Renter beware. Make sure to take pictures of the vehicle when you drop it off.
