The University of Law

"LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) online part time"
I've studied with a few universities and I would rate ULaw as on par with those.
I've read some of the reviews below and I'm sorry there's been such a negative experience. I have experienced some teething issues with access to timetable and the elite platform and the ULaw app not providing the same information but they are workable once you realise where you need to look to find information. It would be helpful if these could be addressed. I haven't had much dealing with the admissions or finances teams so cannot comment.
In terms of the course structure, it's very student lead and I honestly wouldn't expect much more than that for the level of study I enrolled on. The format for studying was new and took some time for me to get used to but it did work. I passed both SQE1 and SQE2 on my first attempt. I would suggest that if you are not confident with SQE2 skills, an 'in person' course may be better than online delivery. The 'have a go and here's generic feedback' is not helpful but I can't see a good way for ULaw to address this with the number of students they have. The manuals provided with the course are helpful and set out in an accessible way and can be downloaded and saved. They also offer alternative download formats. There's mini lectures to support black letter law learning. Before the exams they provide legal updates to make sure students know exactly what law will be applied in the exams. The synap app is an incredibly useful tool for the SQE1. It's fair to say that after a certain point it feels like you've learnt the answers to questions rather than the law in general but it is so helpful to get you ready for the types of questions and the stamina needed to sit the SQE1.
ULaw provide a huge amount of 'extras' to students;
the employability portal is an amazing example of this. They advertise jobs and work experience and will support you getting 4 weeks of QWE. There's additional study skills courses as well as mini courses on referencing and other legal skills which will help with your personal development. The student union also provides additional skills related courses for free, or reduced fees where they are able to meet some of the costs. The library has a huge amount of resources.
The staff at ULaw are incredibly helpful. I've emailed to ask questions and seek guidance and I've always had a positive experience. I have never felt that I have 'bothered' them or that they've ignored me.
Nadders
"Pray you don't get ill. "
I had to leave the course due to illness but the UoL refuse to withdraw me from the course, insisting that Student Finance pay the fees to the end of the course and not to the semester that I left.
Why should I have to pay tuition fees for the whole course when I left after 3 months? I'm now unable to do any further study and I still have to pay the loans even though I got nothing for it through no fault of my own.

"I register LPC with the University of…"
I register LPC with the University of Law. However, due to my unwell pregnancy, along with the difficulty situation, I were not able to continue with the study. I paid partly for the fee.
I requested defer my courses to next year which they transferred me. However, they ask me to pay the whole fee again without considering my situation and the federal.
All of my classmates complaint about the services. The tutor gave me wrong advice about a legal matter. I later have to pay for subscription of a legal forum to get advice from there.
Another time, the tutor did not turn up for the test. I had to wait for 30 minutes, he did not turn up.
When the exam comes, they blocked me from the account, I do not have access to any study material or even attend the exam. I sent many many email to all departments and have been waiting for 3 months for them to contact me but they did not.
I requested to see head teacher in person to discuss my matter but they did not book. I ignore me totally. I explained to them the difficulties of my situation but they do not care.
They do not care about your future.
I do not recommend to everyone.

"THE WORST UNIVERSITY "
Save your money and avoid this university! They have been of no help to international students since day one. Rather than helping their students out, this university will make things ten times harder for you.
I can no longer access my course material because I do not have any resits. Um I need the course material because I am starting my job now?? I did my LPC LLM, which teaches you how to practice law. Little did I know, when I actually start practicing law, they wont give me access to the course material that I paid for... 17k pounds just for my course work to be taken away from my portal. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE???
I had to travel back to my home country and due to the allowed weight, I left my books back in London with the hope I will have access to my material online.
Do they not realise how much stuff I already have to take back home? do they not realise how heavy the hard copy of these books is? Why is my online access to the course material not allowed?
PATHETIC!

"Awful university (LPC LLM)"
Awful university (LPC LLM)
Turned up to lots of exams where there was no assessment paper for me. Market absent for assessments I was present for. Took 2 hours to be directed to the right place over the phone. Student website filled with contradictory information. Assessments rooms are awful, there are computers on the desks, or very tiny desks. Student login doesn't provide you access 80% of academic journals. No communication as to how assessments are marked / what they're looking for to get good grades. Limited access to practice questions. Overloaded with useless information all the time, impossible to navigate through it. Had to navigate through 7 different folders / sections of the website just to find how the word count works in assessments. No societies, or just very small ones that don't reply.
Absolutely hate my experience with this university.
Staff can be friendly though.

"I enrolled with Uni of Law"
I enrolled with Uni of Law, Master of Law, online course, full time in September 2021. In December 2021 I contracted a very serious infection with Covid for several months and after it I had symptoms of long Covid for about one year. I requested the Uni to change me to a part time course and they accepted. But because I couldn't continue with studies because I had to start working full time to recover after the financial difficulties due to Covid 19, I had to ask them in March 2023 to withdraw me from the course altogether because I can't study and work at the same time while still recovering from Covid. They accepted and I asked for a part of the money that I already paid to be refunded. I had paid over £3000, but I only downloaded 6 text books of law, I had sat only one exam of Public Law that I passed and I exchanged a lot of emails in which I was asking for support because of Covid infection. They decided in appeal and in review stage that not only they will not refund the money, but that I am liable for over £7000 for the rest of the course, that I didn't benefit from. I told them this is breach of contract because I didn't get the goods for which I paid the money. You can't possibly pay over £3000 for 6 Law text books and one exam that you sat. The exam was only 4 or 5 pages long test, with a few questions. It would have taken any teacher less than one hour to mark. Now they hold me liable for over £7000. That is why I chose only one star. I would have chosen 0 stars if the option was available.

"The worst spend 14k in my life"
The University of Law has demonstrated significant shortcomings, particularly in its handling of results publication. Recently, students were notified of a delay only 1.5 hours before the scheduled release time. This last-minute communication is highly unprofessional and adds unnecessary pressure, disregarding the mental well-being of students already facing significant anxiety. The university had ample time to inform students of potential delays but failed to do so, demonstrating a lack of foresight and organization.
Furthermore, the financial department has made several errors, leading to threatening emails about withdrawing exam results or preventing students from sitting exams. These mistakes add further stress to an already challenging academic environment, highlighting the lack of professionalism in managing critical processes.
Academic support at the University of Law is also severely lacking. Module tutors often do not know the structure of the exams and provide little to no advice on how to handle them. Tasks covered during workshops rarely resemble those on the exams, leaving students unprepared. There is a noticeable absence of feedback on student progress and no guidance is provided. Compulsory attendance means that when missing a session, due to life unpredictability, students will receive numerous emails from academic tutors, yet no actual help is offered. This lack of support and clarity significantly detracts from the overall educational experience at the University of Law.

"Horrible Communication"
I requested for my course to be updated from LPC LLM to just the LPC and was told in January this was being looked into.
After three months, they finally sorted it after Assessments amended my diploma but failed to advise that they hadn't updated my transcript. Now, another month in and still no progress is being made.
From being passed around from Assessments, to Certifications, then a Programme Team and now back to Assessments? It's been horrible, and has just been so stressful. At this rate, I'll never get my amended transcript or my diploma.
Complaints will acknowledge your complaint but haven't followed up since saying they would get back to me.
It's as if they don't communicate with each other and I seem to be going in a never-ending circle.
I can't recommend this University to anyone based on my experience.

"LLM (SQE1&2) course"
Some things to note before choosing to come here to study for the LLM (SQE1&2) course:
- all teaching of SQE1 practical law content is self taught through reading before class, classes mostly consist of group exercises which don't relate to the knowledge you need for the exam
- no underlying law content is touched upon in the course even though it arguably takes up over 50% of the SQE1 exam content (this was only reiterated to us a few weeks before the exam at the prep course)
- some teachers understand the SQE1 exam but many have little knowledge on it and tell you to revise everything 'just in case'
- told to consistently practice on their practice app to revise however this just makes you memorise the answers to their practice questions as most repeat with just name changes in the questions
- you will have countless admin issues, last minute timetable changes etc
- SQE2 classes are only 5 weeks long with the first 2 being very introductory skills which are not that useful in the long term
- you won't have any feedback for written tasks/mocks, only one chance at getting actual feedback for oral mocks in the course
However, at the minute it seems most providers are taking a stab in the dark with this course so I'm not sure it's much worse than the other options out there. With time, this course could improve. Also the saving grace of ULaw is the practice app which, when utilised well, is a great revision resource over other competitors.
Great course, mate.
"SQE1&2 LLM "
SQE1&2 LLM (passed SQE1 in the second quintile) - The course isn't horrible. But it just isn't good. The prep for SQE2 lacks structure and is by far not enough to prepare you for the exams. SQE1 was alright. The largest issue is that the mocks which ULaw prepared for us for the SQE1, were completely different to the real thing. Much (and I mean MUCH) easier than the real thing. The above would warrant three stars, but the reason I gave them two is because every single person that I know, who is doing the course through self-funding, has had immense issues at this uni. Enough issues that I'm seriously considering making it a 1* review.
One of my friends was unable to access her emails up until the day of the exams. The only reason she even knew her timetable is because she asked a friend who was in the same set, every single week. Did I mention she's self funded? Because that's the main reason they didn't care. And don't bother asking for a refund when you've only received half the service that was promised. Another friend who is self funded, had a similar issue - he wasn't able to log in to the app at all. In other words, one of their "main positives" - the app - was completely inaccessible to him, up until the exams.
I would not recommend any self funded student to do the SQE course here. They simply don't care about you, because the worst you can do is write a bad review.
