"I just installed a large tall thru the…"
I just installed a large tall thru the wall Hale pet door for a client recently! Overall the quality of the double flapped door is pretty good, for info I have installed quite a few of other manufacturers pet doors, some thru door and most thru walls, even electronic ones that worked with a chip! This one however I had issues with, and I’ll explain for the average DIY person.
1. First you need a good pair of metal shears to cut the walk thru tunnel to size, it is really good metal they use.
2. I feel they have the tunnel design backwards, the metal tunnel is factory attached to the inside panel with the security door, you push it into your new opening and trace on the outside of the house wall on the metal to what needs to be cut off! The exterior flap panel is then designed to be screwed thru its frame and into the tunnel metal that you cut to size using their supplied drill and screws! This particular door claims it fits all house type walls, the opening you cut are enough of a tolerance to put the tunnel thru to secure it to the exterior flap door, the problem is how are you supposed to screw it together if on the outside your opening is stucco, brick, block, the screws do not work as they are longer on both sides and bottom that they hit these hard surfaces! I had to resort to going to the hardware store and buying short steel rivets which worked well with the tolerance up against a thick stucco wall! My suggestion to HALE would be to reverse the tunnel, attach it to the outer door so that it can be traced to the inner wall which might be drywall or even lath and plaster but at least a medium that their screws could screw into as well!
3. They include a nice indoor/outdoor carpet that they want you to use construction adhesive to secure it to the sides and bottom inside the tunnel between the flaps! My problem with that is a couple things,
A. Construction adhesive stinks, and between the flaps may make your pet not wanting to use it for awhile if at all!
B. If and when the carpet becomes wet or soiled to the point of gross, you now have to scrape or, the glued down carpet to remove it so you can put something else there! Our option instead was to use indoor/outdoor double sided carpet tape, no odor and can be peeled up when time to replace the carpet with a new one!
So my experience in stalling this pet door and my suggestions to improve on it!

"NOXIOUS CHEMICAL ODOR EMINATING FROM THE FLAPS"
This door went into my wall after some customizing. Its been there for about 6 years and now it was time to replace the flap. Its an outstanding door. However the vinyl flaps have a very very strong offensive chemical odor. It burns the eyes and throat its so strong. Same thing when the door was first installed. I have many concerns and so should you! I have emailed my concerns to Hale, but haven't heard back. When it was installed years ago, I contacted the distributer and they brushed me off.

"I was very pleased with my product"
I was very pleased with my product. After a couple other products that I had used, this one was perfect. The security cover was the buying point for me. Having a sense of security felt great! Other doors I had tried had no cover?? Then the flexible vinyl was the other selling point. The pet doors with solid plastic flaps have the chance to hurt my dog if he get scared and tries to pull back into the house. Happened to a friend of mine dog. This is a strong, powerful, unbreakable pet door made of solid metal instead of plastic. Highly recommended!!

"Although I was happy with the frame and…"
Although I was happy with the frame and how it fit, I’m generally unhappy with the vinyl… The vinyl seems to haze up pretty quickly. I reached out to the company and they told me to use a special cleaner and it hasn’t worked.. too bad you can’t upload a photo on this site. Hazy pet door, but clear French door glass is not a good look.

"Quality Door and Customer service"
I am giving the quality of the door and customer service 5 stars. I purchased my door for installation on my screened in porch. For this installation the pet door needs to be customized by removing the outside edge on two sides. I had to purchase an additional 72 inch stabilizing bar. Then everything went down hill from here but this isn't the fault of the Hale door except that I don't think they should recommend this door for any screen larger than the screen door on a sliding glass door which can be removed to install the door. I found the installation instructions to be somewhat difficult to follow. I couldn't find an authorized dealer any closer to my home than 2.5 hours away. Finally hired a general contractor who screwed up the installation and ended up cutting the 72" stabilizing bar too short. The door is installed but not very well. If I return the door I will only get 50% of the cost back, which I was informed of before I purchased the door. Add shipping to that and It's not worth the time to return it. I plan to have a frame installed in the Screen and install the door in frame which I should have done this in the first place again my bad but I think this should be mention as an alternative to the stabilizing bar. That said when I replace the door it will be with a Hale door with a universal fit.
