European Sleeper

"A fun experience"
Although the heating didn't work to start with this was soon fixed and we were offered another carriage whilst we waited.
An alarm went off in the whole carriage but there was no-one to be found and when we did find someone we were told it's fine. Fine maybe but not for us who wanted to sleep
The carriage is what I expected- maybe a little dated and the pillows and beds hard but it was fun to feel like a student when I'm nearly 40 and have the experience

"Awful, awful, awful"
Everything that could have gone wrong did - first, I was informed the train would not go to Amsterdam as scheduled, but because of railworks I would have to get off at Utrecht at 06-30 - needless to say, it was late to arrive there. On the day of travel I was then informed my sleeping berth had been downgraded, so I now had a shared 6-berth cabin (but I did get a 50 Euro refund because of the downgrade). On getting on, we were told that, unfortunately, there was no dining car from Prague, but one serving tea and coffee and little snacks would be added to the train at Berlin - around 10pm at night, by which time I was hoping to be asleep. This carriage was clearly old and the seats were worn and lumpy, making the bed uncomfortable. Even if the bed had been comfortable, I would not have slept because the train shuddered and lurched the whole way, so that one was continually tossed around on the hard bunk in an unpredictable way. Curtains on the window did not properly close, so every time a station was passed a bright light shone into the carriage. Worst of all was the paltry breakfast - a dry roll and a box full of little things such as a cracker, a tiny pot of some kind of margarine and a little pot of a disgusting substance which said it was cheese - the latter had clearly begun to ferment and stank strongly of faeces when opened. It had no eat-by date, but was completely unfit for human consumption and stank out the carriage. Lastly, one of the reasons for traveling by night sleeper is to not fly and reduce one's carbon footprint, but a breakfast of lots of tiny items, all wrapped in plastic, is just plain bad for the environment!

"Not the experience we'd hoped for!"
Booked double cabin, but due to a fault we were downgraded to a couchette. It was not very clean & still had traces of the previous occupancy e.g half empty water bottle. The electric to the charging points went off shortly after departure & was never restored, despite a promise by the very polite train guard.

"As someone who travels 4 times a year…"
As someone who travels 4 times a year across Europe by train, I fully support the ethos of European Sleeper. Still, I am unwilling to endorse the downgrade at the last minute, uncomfortable bunks, ill-fitting curtains and 3 out of 4 toilets out of order. I may not travel with ES again.

"WORST experience ever!!"
WORST experience ever!!! Not only did they change our destination so we had to jump off and onto a new train. But our cabin of travel wasn’t available and we weren’t told this until we boarded the train. We had a sleeper cabin with a toilet and was downgraded to a couchette cabin.
THEN…. When pushing the beds up against the wall one clicked into place but then slipped back out and smashed me on the top of my head. There was blood everywhere, assistance to get off the train and that was it.
When I emailed them about the cabin change and the incident they offered me a 50% refund which wouldn’t even be the difference of the far let alone nearly giving me brain damage.
I would NEVER recommend or travel with them again. I am seeking legal assistance with next stage as they gave me an 85% refund (just the difference of the fare) and refused to engage with me any further when I was discussing medical reports which they asked for.
An absolute joke! They said they would give me 100% refund if I obtained a medical report which I was happy to do, but they ignored my request to fund me getting such a report which would have cost me roughly $500 with X-rays.
Do everything in your power to stay away from this death trap!

"It was a long but also quiet journey"
It was a long but also quiet journey, because I hed a cabin foor myself with no other travellers. In the morning i recieved a small breakfast with coffee and finally arrived at Praque at 11.00 hours.

"Downgraded 3x in a row"
Downgraded 3x in a row and the last 2 times also had to leave from a different station. It almost makes me believe they sell the more expensive Sleeper cabins without being able to reliably make them available.
The last time I got the downgrade I was also told I would only be with 3 people in the cabin, as originally booked: still ended up with 6.
Besides the downgrades I wouldn’t recommend the train to anyone taller than 1.75 and expecting to actually sleep. The beds are rock hard and 1.80 long. You can’t actually really sleep on them and arrive at your destination with a messed up back, hips and shoulder.

"Good experience but needs improvement"
We had specifically chosen this train and this mode of travel to go from Brussels to Dresden to test the sleeping car, but unfortunately it has technical issues, and when I read the comments on this site, it seems that this has been the case for many days... So we were warned a few days before our trip that we would be downgraded to a couchette compartment, but which was privatized for us, which is a good point, but a shame: it is clearly not the same comfort as what we expected from a sleeping car. All we have to do now is wait for the reimbursement of 50€/person which is planned as compensation (but still not received to this day...)
Concerning the journey, no problem to report at the beginning of the journey, we even arrived several minutes early at the Dutch stations! But in Germany, it is not the same story... And after a long stop in the Berlin area, we entered the central station (Hbf) 1 hour late. A delay that we then kept for the rest of the journey.
On the other hand, we found the staff on board very pleasant and very helpful and we want to stay on this positive note (but I'm still waiting for my refund to stay on this positive note!)

"El peor viaje de mi vida"
El peor viaje de mi vida. Todo olía mal, los sanitarios asquerosente sucios, los asientos incómodos.. venden una opción para viaje largo cuando en realidad no están preparados para dar opciones cómodas a todos los pasajeros. NO LO RECOMIENDO EN ABSOLUTO

"The train was late for both of my…"
The train was late for both of my journeys, but the loudspeakers kept informing us in a helpful way. The staff was nice, everything was relaxed, a very good experience! It would also be nice if the breakfast was included, like on other overnight trains like the Nightjet, especially when the trains are often delayed.
