Co Wheels Car Club

"Regular user"
I’ve been using co-wheels very regularly for about a year and think they are a fantastic company. I got rid of my car and now use a bike for trips around town and co-wheels for out of town journeys. Much cheaper than hire vehicles. There have been occasional problems with charging points or other technical issues, but the customer service is brilliant - it doesn’t take long to get through and they invariably get the problem sorted quickly. Some of the other comments note issues with cleanliness. This isn’t something that I’ve found to be a particular issue - the cars are very well used and sometimes people leave items, or there might be a few bits of grass/sand in the boot if they’ve been used for rural excursions, but nothing major. A small number of the Bristol city centre car locations are under trees and they do suffer from tree sap etc dropping on them, but most locations don’t have this problem. All in all a great company which I hope continues to expand to new locations.

"A Great Company"
I've been using Co-wheels during the summer as I work abroad for about the last three years. I'm always impressed by the level of service and the quality of the vehicles - though the level of cleanliness of some vehicles is questionable (bring a small vacuum just in case). However, this is by far an affordable and worthwhile enterprise towards reducing our dependency on motor cars and it's impact on the environment.

"My first booking and the car was…"
My first booking and the car was incredibly dirty could not see mirrors as so covered in grime and tree sap. Bird poo all over the car. Not able to wipe down. Opening the boot meant I had to clean my hands afterwards. Passenger door very severely dented handle totally broken from an accident 12 days prior to my collection (according to helpline) and left without a repair. Lots of problems unlocking etc. Inside full of rubbish and very dusty. I didn’t drive it. Dangerous, unsafe and only compensated for the hire. I am utterly stunned by this experience. Two small kids crying and upset as day out delayed. So sad really wanted to do away with having to own a car. Edit: Co-wheels reached out and offered some better customer service - hence two stars.

"Brilliant service"
At the start of the booking I could not find the car, apparently it could be anywhere is a zone. After a quick phone call to the number on the back on the card they were able to get the location and get me on my way!

"Very convenient"
Recently joined and have found the experience works very well for us. The only thing we’ve noticed is how grotty the car is inside sometimes - food scraps, stained seat etc. Are the cars cleaned very often?

"I had a problem with my account in…"
I had a problem with my account in advance of a booking (my own fault). Lauren and Georgia couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful in quickly sorting it out for me. I highly recommend Co Wheels!

"Very helpful and responsive!"
The customer support email is always readily available whenever I had any questions, and they're quite pleasant to chat with. The only issue with my experience is probably the limited number of Charge Place Scotland charging points in England but that's understandable given the car that I'm booking is from Glasgow.

"Not ready for electric vehicles"
I've only made three bookings since joining and all of them have been problematic. I'm a big fan of car clubs having lived in various cities where owning a car would be troublesome, and now having moved to the suburbs I wanted to delay getting a car for as long as possible so I was happy to learn that there was a car club operating in the town I've moved to.
Unfortunately, the only vehicle that's available to me locally is an electric MG. I don't have a problem with electric vehicles but I really don't think they work with this car club model where there could be back to back bookings meaning no time to recharge. Add that to the fact that the Dunbar car is connected to a slow charger there's a very good chance that the car will be out of charge when you get to it, which has happened to me.
Furthermore, it seems like the car itself suffers from recurring issues which takes it out of action and causes it to break down mid-journey which has ruined several of my days. On the plus side, the support team I've dealt with have been friendly and done what they can to help.
For this to work the cars need to be reliable, the chargers need to be the fast charge type, and there should ideally be a gap between bookings for electric vehicles to allow them to recharge. Until this happens you're better having your own vehicle.
